Staying power: Auburn's Old Town Farmer's Market still going strong every Saturday

Get fresh, buy local. The Auburn Old Town Farmer's Market is using those four words to describe its year-round gathering that takes place every Saturday, rain or shine, from 7:30 a.m. until noon at 150 Auburn Folsom Road. "We have been in operation since 1986 at our current location," said Robert Bonk, who is the owner of Placer Farmer's Market. The market is a Certified Farmers Market, meaning all the farmers and ranchers grow and raise what they sell to people attending the market. "Individual farm/ranch agricultural production is verified by the agricultural department of the county of production," Bonk said. "We also host a community event adjacent to the farmers market to allow food vendors to sell food of their own production." As spring is quickly approaching, Bonk noted some items at the market that can be purchased: citrus such as lemons, navels, tangerines, mandarins, kumquats, grapefruit and pummelo. Adventuring to vegetables, vendors also have lettuce, Swiss chard, kale, cabbages, radicchio and collards. There is also beef, lamb and chicken for people looking to cook a hearty meal. Need something to go with the main dish? Bonk noted vendors also sell apples, mushrooms, carrots, beets, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and strawberries. Vendors who grow and sell their own foods are also at the farmer's market. "The food vendors all make their products from their own recipes," Bonk noted.
