Auburn Journal names new managing editor

One of the oldest newspapers in the region welcomes a new face to its staff who is no stranger when it comes to the news business. Veteran journalist and editor Bill Poindexter has been named the new managing editor of the Auburn Journal, announced Bill Sullivan, associate publisher of Gold Country Media."We are very pleased to have Bill join our staff at the Auburn Journal as well as all of Gold Country Media," Sullivan said. "As a former employee of Gold Country Media, he knows our market and operations well. As an author and a former editor of other area newspapers, he brings a great deal of new knowledge back to the place he once called home." Poindexter previously was part of the Gold Country Media family from 2010-2013 when he was the sports editor of the Roseville Press Tribune. He began his career with his first byline at 19 years old working at a twice-weekly newspaper in Manteca and worked his way up to a metropolitan daily through the years. Additionally, he has authored two popular books in recent years, illustrating the rich history behind Roseville's All-American Speedway and Stockton 99 Speedway."Through all the changes the media, and newspapers specifically, have gone through in the past 10 years, one thing that hasn't changed is the importance of local news coverage," Poindexter said. "The people of Auburn and people in every community need, deserve and, more so than anything, want to know what's going on."Prior to his first stint at Gold Country Media, Poindexter was a sports editor the Modesto Bee and was an assistant city editor at the Stockton Record. He most recently worked for the Sacramento Bee as a print editor, prior to making the decision to return."I love Auburn, I love the scenery, the layout of the streets, the buildings – it's a beautiful town, and admittedly I like the breweries too," Poindexter said. "I look forward to walking the streets, meeting the city and county officials, talking with citizens, attending local events and breathing this fresh air. I can't wait to learn more about Auburn, and I want to know what the people want to know so we can tell those stories."Poindexter brings more than 40 years of experience to the Auburn Journal as he steps into the position that was recently vacated by Julie Miller, as she followed a new journey. He joins a new dynamic staff in the Auburn newsroom that includes reporters Traci Newell and Stacey Adams who have recently joined the team."I am truly excited to have Bill return to our team, he is a great addition to what I feel is a very talented and dynamic team, not only in the Auburn newsroom, but throughout Gold Country Media as our entire editorial team from all of our publications work in collaboration," Sullivan said.In the very near future, both Poindexter and Sullivan will participate in a handful of community events, including an upcoming "Coffee with the Journal," which will welcome readers and businesses owners to talk about ideas over a cup of Joe. A date and time will be announced once Poindexter has settled into his new role. Until then, the community is welcome to reach out to their new editor whether it is to just say hello or share a new idea.Bill Poindexter can be reached at billp@goldcountrymedia.comor 530-852-0256.
