Auburn City Council addresses community concerns around racism

The city council took a few minutes during public comment at Monday night's meeting to address racism and the local demonstrations that have taken place in Auburn recently. "I'll be honest, I have struggled myself with the right words because there aren't right words related to racism in our country," said Mayor Daniel Berlant, who brought up the topic. "This is a unique historical opportunity for us to have a conversation." Berlant said he and his fellow council members have had discussions with Auburn Police Chief Ryan Kinnan related to policies and procedures and the "importance of community policing." Berlant said he was working with Kinnan and other organizations to schedule a modified town hall meeting to broach the topic of race. "I've been working with a number of community leaders in discussing the best forum to listen to those in the community that feel unheard or frankly aren't comfortable or trusting of the city," Berlant said in an email to the Auburn Journal on Thursday. "We haven't confirmed a date but continue to work to get something scheduled very soon." Council members agreed they were pleased to see protesters remain peaceful. "I am so appreciative of the youth and the residents who brought their message forward, clearly articulate it and stay peaceful in those conversations," Berlant said. Councilwoman Alice Dowdin Calvillo said she believes everyone has the right to protest and was thankful to the protesters and public safety and public works officials who put in extra work in response to the demonstrations. "We as leaders do need to listen and we need to propose change where it is appropriate," she said. Councilwoman Cheryl Maki said she was thankful for how the protests make you think. "Right now, we all have to give our hearts and think about how our hearts are," Maki said. "We all think we aren't racist and prejudice and I honestly believe I am not, but everyone has to look inside at how they think and feel and that is why these marches are good – they make us look at ourselves." Councilwoman Sandy Amara agreed with Maki, adding the discussion about race needs to continue. "We need to continue the discussion and make change," Amara said. "I am especially proud that Auburn participated in expressing themselves in an appropriate manner." Councilman Matt Spokely also briefly broached the topic. "I agree with my fellow council members," he said. "The tragic events that led to Mr. (George) Floyd's death are appalling to me so yes, reform is necessary." Following the council members' remarks, three public comments, which were emailed to the council, addressed the topic of race, asking the city to be clear about its policies and handling racial issues.
