It's all downhill, and uphill, for Tevis Cup winner, as Jeremy Reynolds puts his feet to work

Jeremy Reynolds was asked the usual questions following his fourth Tevis Cup victory late Saturday night at the Gold Country Fairgrounds: How does it feel? How did you do it? What was the key to victory? But were his horse able to answer that last question, Treasured Moments might have said, "The key was having a rider who can run for a while and take some of the weight off me." Reynolds is also quite the runner. He has completed the Western States Endurance Run, and he spent some of Saturday's 65th annual Tevis Cup Ride – 100 miles, one day – on foot. Behind at one point, "20, 30 minutes back," Reynolds said, he ran the long downhills and hiked the big climbs and caught the leaders at Chicken Hawk (mile 64). Reynolds and Treasured Moments rode away and arrived at the Gold Country Fairgrounds for a victory lap at 10:03 p.m. Runner-up Christoph Schork of Moab, Utah, third-place Vicki Holzer of Houston and fourth-place Susan Kramer of Peoria, Arizona, arrived an hour and 10 minutes later. "That's where I make it up, in the canyons," said Reynolds, who exchanged a long embrace with wife Heather, a three-time Tevis Cup champ. "My feet are a little beat up." Reynolds wondered whether Treasured Moments had fully recovered following their win in Italy two months ago. Reynolds said he purchased Treasured Moments "as a young ex-racehorse." "The way she takes care of herself and eats is amazing," he said. "She just won one of the biggest races in the world. She's such a pleasure to be around. She doesn't get riled by others bumping her. It happens every year because she has those attributes." The Reynoldses are listed as being from Dunnellon, Florida, but Heather is from the Bay Area and Jeremy moved to Nevada as a teenager. They also call Greenwood home for half the year. "This feels great. It's really special," Jeremy Reynolds said. "The community, the volunteers come to help. The atmosphere is just like any other big sporting event around the world. It's definitely just an awesome thing, and the Auburn community is just amazing." Also, Ann Hall of Auburn finished ninth and earned her 10th Tevis Cup buckle riding Atlas. Hall completed the ride at 1:09 a.m. Sunday. Other area finishers who earned buckles were Shane Lesher of Garden Valley in 26th (4:15 a.m.), Diane Stevens of Lincoln in 31st (4:30 a.m.), Dean Moon of Cool in 33rd (4:32 a.m.), Alicia Campbell and Ken Campbell, both of Lincoln, in 34th and 35th (4:33 a.m.), Cristine Grey of Cool in 40th (4:43 a.m.), Kelly Williams-Stehman of Lincoln in 41st (4:45 a.m.), Katie Salci of Newcastle in 42nd (4:45 a.m.), Nancy Martin of Penn Valley in 46th (4:55 a.m.), Annette Phillips of Auburn in 48th (4:58 a.m.) and Carol Wooster of Auburn in 50th (4:58 a.m.). Of 167 riders on the entry list, 63 finished and earned buckles. Kyla Law developed a following from start to her 36th-place finish at 4:33 a.m. Sunday. Kyla, 13 years old, rode Flash, a Hackney Pony.
