Auburn Journal athlete of the week: Del Oro freshman Sidhu wins weight class at Reno Worlds

Del Oro High School freshman Siraj Sidhu won the 108-pound class in the 15U division at the Reno Worlds Wrestling Tournament last weekend. Sidhu was a perfect 7-0, taking down some of the top competition from across the country. Sidhu was also named the most outstanding 15U wrestler of the tournament. "I've been here many times, so I've seen some of the kids either here or at different tournaments," said Sidhu, who was the top seed in his class. "There were also some tough kids that dropped down to weight, and there were some awesome kids that I never saw before from out of state." Sidhu was confident entering the tournament, as he had beaten several of the top wrestlers at the tournament before. "I felt like I had a good shot going in," Sidhu said. "I've beaten most of the top kids I've wrestled, but there's some unfamiliar faces and that makes it challenging. I just had a good feeling going into the tournament. I don't want to have that attitude that I am better than anyone." Sidhu said he felt in control for the majority of the tournament, but he didn't like the way he was wrestling in the championship match. "It was a pretty good feeling to win it, but it was just a step to my main goal of winning a state championship before I graduate," Sidhu said. "Winning state is much harder because it's all ages, so it's just a small accomplishment compared to where I want to be." The Reno tournament was a stepping stone for Sidhu, who will compete in North Dakota later this year. He mentioned that winning the Reno Worlds as a freshman gives him confidence heading into the next season that he is confident he can win the tournament for the next three years.
