WPUSD to make decision about controversial book as required reading

In a May 17 article, "WPUSD makes decision to keep controversial book," Gold Country Media reported that Western Placer Unified School District decided to keep the controversial book, "The Hate U Give," as part of the ninth-grade required reading curriculum. However, it was an appointed Western Placer Unified School District committee, The Hate U Give Review Committee, that decided the book should be kept. The school district board is still undecided. "The Hate U Give," was assigned in March at Twelve Bridges High School. It was introduced the year before to Lincoln High School with no known complaints. Since the book's introduction to Twelve Bridges High School, several parents, students and community members have voiced their concerns about whether it should remain. Because of the book's controversy and mixed responses from the Lincoln community, school district Superintendent Kerry Callahan appointed a committee to help make the decision about whether "The Hate U Give" should remain as required reading. At the May 17 school board meeting, Western Placer Unified School District director of personnel services Michael Maul announced that the Hate U Give Review Committee found that "The Hate U Give" remains as required reading. What's next?"According to our policy, those who filed complaints have a right to appeal the review committee's decision to the board. The board's decision shall be final," Callahan said. "Now that we have appeals, the board will hear the appeals on June 20 and make a final decision to either uphold the review committee's decision or to render their own decision."
