(Standing Guard – oral histories) Howard Nakae was operating his family farm (Twin Peaks Orchard) near Newcastle ever since they were released from an internment camp after the war. While at Tulelake Relocation Center, Howard worked on a coal crew as a vegetable farmer, and then doing maintenance on the 23 tractors on the camp farm. In March 1943, Howard and his wife were recruited to work on a farm near Caldwell, Idaho, and allowed to leave camp. The couple lived in a chicken coop until they found a small cottage to rent. At the war's conclusion, Howard felt it was important to go back home, even though they received a cold reception from the local residents. Fortunately, his friend, Dan Mancebo had taken care of the family farm until the family came home. "We pulled in and walked in the house and it was absolutely immaculate. My mother opened the refrigerator and there was food in there ready to be cooked. My sister went out to the chicken coop and chickens were still there – just like nothing had ever happened."
