Tevis Cup: Jeremy Reynolds claims title, Haley Moquin wins Haggin Cup

Jeremy Reynolds claimed his fifth Tevis Cup title Saturday night, crossing the finish line at Auburn's McCann Stadium at 8:29 p.m., 15 hours and 14 minutes after starting at Soda Springs on the back of his bay Arabian, Treasured Moments (Treasure). It was the second win for the duo, which won the 100-mile, one-day ride in 2021. "It feels great. I love this horse," Reynolds said after sharing a moment with his trusted steed at the finish line. "There were four previous winners in this year's field, but three of them were recent winners, so I knew it was gonna be kind of tougher and a little bit more competitive this year." Reynolds was among the leaders from the start of the ride but really began to pull away in the final stretch. "She was in better shape for the conditions than she was when we won in 2021," Reynolds said of Treasure. "She prepped really well for the conditions, and I knew it was gonna be a lot faster just because of the way we started the ride." Reynolds spoke about the challenges of staying in the front of a pack in a ride like Tevis, as it is not uncommon for horses near the front to be pulled for various reasons. "The biggest thing is that I know my horse's strength so I set a pace that I know we can maintain," Reynolds said. "Typically through the middle of the race, I kind of took it easy and I actually gave five or six places where people pushed in the hottest, biggest climb part of the day." The strategy paid off for the duo, as they worked their way into the lead in the final stretch and never looked back. "I don't think that the race starts until after halfway down by the Cal 2 mark," Reynolds said. "That's where speed is a little bit more of that dictating factor and that's what I tried to save and we were prepped for that part of the course." The win cemented Reynolds' Tevis legacy, as he joins elite company among riders with five victories. It also marks his eighth cup at Tevis, as he has won three Haggin Cups as well. "I guess I've set a new precedent, but I just think it's great to be part of history and to set a new tone for others and I just love it," Reynolds said, noting he hopes his success inspires others to achieve greatness in endurance riding. "I want people to feel what I get to feel every day, and I want to keep the younger generation driving for more." Last year's champion, Gabriela Blakely, finished in second in 15 hours, 21 minutes, and Jenna Harrison finished third in 15:30. The Haggin Cup was claimed by Haley Moquin of Spring, Texas, who won the coveted honor for the first time with her Arabian, Freaky. Moquin and Freaky finished sixth overall in 16 hours, 10 minutes. In total, 61 of the 94 teams that started recorded a successful ride.
