West Park dominates NU, wins 62-21

If Jason Tenner's said it once, he's said it 100 times this season; he wants his team to be getting better every week and he wants his team to be peaking at the right time of the season. Coming off a 62-21 win on the road against Nevada Union, Tenner said it was the team's most complete game of the season, as West Park improved to 2-0 in league and to 6-1 on the season. "I've told the kids our goal is to get better each and every week," Tenner said. "This is as close as we've played to a complete game yet. The offense played pretty clean, but there are still too many penalties. We need to be more disciplined. We need to make sure we're peaking at the right time." The game didn't start off well for West Park, as Jaden Jackson had a pass intercepted and taken back to the end zone for a score, but it was all Panthers after that as West Park outscored the Miners 62-14 the rest of the way. "The floodgates opened up pretty well after that," Tenner said. Jackson finished the game 17-for-27 for 357 yards and six touchdowns, as he averaged 21 yards per completed pass. Wide receivers Ryan Sisson and Mason Johnson had big games, as Sisson caught four passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns and Johnson hauled in six catches for 103 yards and three scores. Marcus Cheema had four catches for 41 yards and a touchdown, while Obie Garcia caught a touchdown pass from Harjun Gill. Ben Osby also scored on a rushing touchdown. Defensively, Calvon Johnson had a game of a lifetime, as he made six solo tackles and was in on 11 total, made two sacks, forced two fumbles and also recovered both fumbles. Johnson returned one fumble for a touchdown and almost scored on the second fumble recovery, as he returned it down inside the five-yard line. "Calvon's been getting better and better every week," Tenner said. "This week we moved him from inside linebacker to outside, as we're trying to find the right combination after having some injuries. He played a great first game at outside linebacker for us." West Park plays host to Ponderosa (1-1, 3-4) on Friday night.
