California celebrates first-ever Adopt-a-Pet Day with free adoptions

California is having its inaugural Adopt-a-Pet Day this Saturday, June 1. What this means is if you've been thinking about adding to the family with a pet, you can pick up that furry friend for free Saturday. Some shelters across the state are not just offering free adoptions Saturday but free microchips, ID tags and licenses. Placer SPCA in Roseville is waiving pet adoption fees all day on June 1. Shelter officials say they are at capacity with many more animals coming in; the hope is that events like this will encourage people to adopt a new four-legged friend. One feline who is a longtime resident at Placer SPCA and would really love a forever home is a cat named Falkor, according to Placer SPCA Marketing Manager Shannon Smith. "Falkor has been at Placer SPCA for almost a year. He loves watching trains pass by from his 'catio,' " Smith said. "Placer SPCA volunteers have been working to teach him to sit and more." The shelter has recently had a huge influx of large-breed dogs and puppies. One dog that has become a favorite of shelter volunteers is Silas, who really needs to find his forever family. "Silas is a big boy with lots of energy that makes it hard for him to be in a shelter environment for a long time," Smith said. "He's one of our best fetchers and could play ball with you all day long." California shelters are facing huge pressure due to overcrowding, according to a spokesperson from CalAnimals. "By increasing adoption demand and encouraging pet-ready families to visit their local shelter first, we can make a change." At Placer SPCA, appointments can be scheduled in advance online, and they try to accommodate walk-ins. The shelter is open Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
