Pony Express Re-ride set to arrive in Folsom on June 27

After a round-the-clock trek from St. Joseph, Missouri, the annual Pony Express Re-ride is scheduled to arrive in Folsom this Thursday, June 27. The National Pony Express Association recreates the Pony Express in a commemorative re-ride over 10 days each June. The annual re-ride goes 24 hour per day, traveling the Pony Express National Historic Trail, now part of the National Trail System run by the National Park Service. The route starts in Missouri and travels through Kansas, Colorado, Utah, Nevada and California. Letters are carried in a "mochila" over the original trail. Riding more than 1,800 miles through eight states, the group runs non-stop until the mail is delivered. This national event is an opportunity for young and old to ride the Pony Express Trail and receive mail via the Pony Express. More than 750 riders participate with roughly 1,000 letters mailed each year, officials said. Riders are scheduled to arrive just above Folsom upcountry at the Rescue Post Office at 9:22 a.m. Thursday, then Green Valley Center at 10:45 a.m. The riders will then continue to Folsom Dam Road at about 11:06 a.m. and the Folsom Museum on Natoma Street at 11:30, officials estimate. The Express will then make a stop at Willow Creek and Hazel Avenue before continuing to Old Sacramento on Thursday afternoon. The National Pony Express Association began in California in 1978. California was the western terminus of the historic Pony Express Route.
