CSP Sacramento inmate investigated for attack on 2 officers

An inmate at California State Prison Sacramento allegedly attacked two peace officers in an apparent attempted homicide attempt. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) said it is investigating the attack allegedly committed by Ronald D. Yandell, 62, on Nov. 22 at around 8:20 a.m. According to CDCR officials, Yandell is accused of drawing an improvised weapon against two officers while he was being escorted back to his cell after a scheduled appointment at the prison's central health building. The officers deployed three applications of pepper spray, causing Yandell to drop the weapon. Officers placed him in restraints and removed him from the scene. Yandell was evaluated by medical staff and was found to not have sustained injuries. No staff was injured, and an improvised weapon was found at the scene. The case will be referred to the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office for possible felony prosecution. Yandell was received from Contra Costa County on March 18, 2004, sentenced to life with the possibility of parole for first-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter.
