Family weekend getaway: Inn Town Campground delivers year-round comfort

Finding a spot that keeps my kids happy while satisfying parents' need for relaxation isn't easy, but Inn Town Campground in Nevada City checked every box during our recent family weekend. Our family, plus our German shepherd puppy, stayed in the Sweetwater Glamping tent — and the heated mattresses were an instant hit with the kids, making this a viable year-round camping destination even when Sierra foothills temperatures drop. Owners Dan and Erin Thiem have created something special at this USA Today 10Best winner for Best RV Campground. When our SUV was having trouble on Friday afternoon, Dan jumped right in to help without hesitation. The campground combines natural beauty — towering pines and peaceful surroundings — with practical amenities like a communal kitchen, camp store stocked with s'mores fixings, swimming pool and Friday-Saturday movie nights that had our kids all happy and not wanting to leave. Nevada City itself proved the perfect base camp for family exploration, with its historic downtown offering art galleries and cafes just a short walk away. Between the campground's fire pits, the town's Gold Rush charm and activities like fishing and mountain biking nearby, Inn Town Campground delivers that sweet spot where parents can unplug while kids stay entertained. For families seeking hidden gems in Northern California, this one is worth the drive.
