Woodcreek works through first game jitters, downs Lincoln 54-48

Sophomore guard Sarah Sheefel converted five of her eight 3-point attempts for a team-high 15 points Wednesday in the Woodcreek High girls basketball team's 54-48 season-opening win at Lincoln.Post Kim Albers had 12 points and wing Danielle Lassiter nine points and 11 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who led by four points at halftime and 14 points at the end of the third quarter."It was kind of a sloppily played game," first year Timberwolves' head coach Ray Beck said. "You could tell it was our first game of the year. We turned the ball over way too many times, probably around 25 times. But we found a way to get the 'W' with a couple of good spurts in the second and third quarters."Reserve guard Nicole Saari added eight points for Woodcreek, which is scheduled to host Folsom at 6 p.m. Tuesday.Lincoln's Kayla Baker led all scorers with 28 points.Oakmont 36, Bella Vista 32Aly Simpson had nine points and nine rebounds, and all of the Vikings played stout defense Tuesday as they downed the visiting Broncos to improve to 1-1."It was a great overall win because we had a huge team effort on both sides of the ball," said Oakmont coach Nicki Mitchell.Raquel Braswell was among the defensive leaders for Oakmont, and she also had 11 rebounds.The Vikings play five games next week, beginning with a 7 p.m. contest Monday at San Juan.Oakmont JV 35, Bella Vista JV 34Renessa Gassaway scored all three of the Vikings' points in overtime Tuesday and finished with seven. Oakmont (1-1) trailed 17-15 at halftime and 29-24 after three quarters, but rallied to tie the game 32-32 by the end of regulation. Katrina Knudson led the Vikings with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Oakmont lost 28-15 to Casa Roble on Monday. Gassaway had six points and five rebounds, and Kristara Gipson had seven points and four rebounds.Woodcreek frosh 42, Lincoln 13Nonny Okoye led an inspired defensive effort by the entire Timberwolves squad. Woodcreek (1-0) led 13-2 after the first quarter and kept the heat on the Zebras defensively the rest of the way. Alysha Fuchino topped the Timberwolves with 18 points and Chelsea Green had 12. Coach Lori Ann Donnell, who relinquished the varsity coaching job after last season, praised point guard Casie Tingley for her efforts running the offense.
