New Year's crime wrap: Roseville cops arrest 6 for DUI

Local law enforcement agencies were busy over the New Year's Eve party period, as some motorists found festivities turn to jail time for drunken driving and other incidents. In Roseville, police responded to 204 calls for service between 8 p.m. Wednesday and 5 a.m. Thursday, Spokeswoman Dee Dee Gunther said. Six people were arrested for DUI and six for public intoxication, she said. Police also handled 15 calls for miscellaneous disturbances, nine noise complaints, five fireworks complaints and two calls of shots being fired. No injuries or property damage was reported in those incidents, Gunther said. That's a busy night, but not "catastrophic," she said, and about the same as last year.Local California Highway Patrol officers arrested five people for DUI. Placer County Sheriff's officers arrested one, and Rocklin arrested three, said Sheriff's Spokesman Jeffrey Ausnow."As I look at these numbers I'm thankful they aren't higher, but certainly any drunk driving is dangerous," he said. "So in a perfect world the number would be zero."On the state's highways, 438 people were arrested for DUI, and 11 people died in traffic-related incidents during the New Year's Eve party period. Four people died and 362 were arrested last year, according to the California CHP.DUI laws are about to get tougher in 2009, with three new DUI-related laws. One of them prohibits a convicted DUI offender from driving with a blood alcohol level of .01 or higher while under probation. Another requires courts to more strongly consider requiring an ignition interlock device for drivers arrested with a .15 BAC or higher.
