Auburn man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and arson

An Auburn man was placed in custody at the Placer County Jail on Tuesday for felony charges in connection with a weekend structure fire that caused extensive damage to an Auburn home.Zachary S. Huntley, 21, was arrested Monday night on suspicion of arson, attempted murder, burglary and stalking, said Tina Rose, spokeswoman for the California Department of Forestry.CDF Fire Investigator Eric Wood, Auburn Police Detective Joe Rangel and the Auburn Fire Department investigated the Westly Lane house fire.Sgt. Dan Coe, of the Auburn Police Department said arson investigators found "something suspicious" at the fire, which led them to investigate further."The area was sealed off as a crime scene while Joe Rangel and (Wood) followed up on leads and collected evidence," Coe said.The fire was discovered around 5 a.m. Saturday by 16-year-old Matthew Shadel who woke up and smelled smoke.All four occupants of the home escaped without injury, but Auburn firefighter engineer Tom Carlisle tore his Achilles tendon while fighting the blaze.Mike Shadel's daughter Jaime Shadel, may have been the intended target.For more information, read the complete story in Wednesday's Journal.
