Joe Mark Shackelford, DVM

Joe Mark Shackelford died of complications of the cure for Acute Myelogenous Leukemia and a bone marrow transplant on January 3, 2004.Born August 31, 1948, Dr. Shackelford attended Colorado State University and graduated in 1973 with honors in veterinary medicine. He built Bowman Veterinary Hospital in Auburn and worked there for 23 years. He was dedicated to the Placer County Sheriff's Canine Department, working with and providing better health for their dogs. He also worked with local 4-H clubs to breed and donate healthy German Shepherds to the department. He was a member of the Lions Club in previous years and also enjoyed participating in events at the Auburn Racquet Club, where he was known as an avid, competitive tennis player. He generously donated his time to benefit the Children's Home Society. He is survived by his wife, Sandy, three children, and many other family members and friends.A reception will be held in Dr. Shackelford's honor at his home at 1 PM on Sunday, January 11, 2004.
