Suspect in high-speed chase ID?ed

Journal Staff WriterA Citrus Heights man who led police on a high-speed chase that included gunfire Tuesday has been identified as Roy Christopher Edwards, 33.Edwards was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer, felony evading arrest, reckless driving, driving while under the influence and assault with a deadly weapon, according to Larry Blevins, public information officer for the California Highway Patrol.The chase began around 4 p.m. Tuesday on eastbound Interstate 80. Blevins said officers estimated Edwards reached speeds up to 100 mph.At one point Officer Mike Fong, who was in pursuit of Edwards and riding a CHP motorcycle, had to jump off his motorcycle to avoid being hit by Edward?s Ford F-150 pickup truck.?(Edwards) tried to run over the officer,? Blevins said. ?The officer shot about seven rounds at the truck, hitting it four times.?Blevins said witnesses assisted Fong in righting the motorcycle, at which time pursuit continued as Edwards re-entered the interstate heading west toward Auburn.The chase ultimately ended after officers placed a spike strip, designed to puncture the vehicle?s tires, on the road, flattening the Ford?s front tires. Edwards was placed under arrest and is being held without bail at Placer County Jail.Fong is on paid administrative duty until the investigation is complete, Blevins said.
