Best-selling artist rocks Folsom

As Guns N' Roses, Ozzy Osbourne, and Van Halen blared from the speakers, world-famous artist Michael Godard was all smiles Saturday as he autographed and customized his artwork for more than 500 visitors at Sutter Street's American Visions Art Gallery."The people today were awesome," he said. "Some stood in line for four or five hours. It was incredible."Godard, who accepted the gallery's invitation to appear more than six months ago, was initially worried about the reception he'd receive."At first, I thought you'd be hearing crickets," he said. "I wasn't sure if people here were familiar with my work."It turns out Godard had no reason to worry. American Visions estimates 500-700 people attended the event."We've worked really hard planning this," said gallery director Gabrielle Stark. "You need a certain amount of art to get an artist to come, so we really worked to build the event up. But I think everyone really enjoyed it."Godard's visit was originally scheduled from 4-8 p.m., but because of a delayed flight, he did not arrive until closer to 5:30 p.m. To make sure each visitor went home happy, he stayed until well past 11 p.m. "I'm just so glad so many people enjoy my art," he said. "How can you tell someone who stood in line all that time with their kids, 'No, I don't have anymore time?' I don't have the heart for that."While signing, Godard showed his appreciation for the crowd by shaking hands, sharing stories, and posing for countless pictures."I remember how hard things were for me," he said. "I try to keep grounded by appreciating each and every moment I have. When I'm exhausted and my feet are black and blue from touring, I think of all the people who work so much harder than I do, of all the starving artists so much more talented than I am."For Godard, who is currently the best-selling artist in the country, fame still remains welcomed surprise."The officers' lounge at the Pentagon is decked with my stuff," he said. "That's just crazy. But it's surreal to me when someone actually calls me Godard instead of [magician] Criss Angel."Despite his success, the "Rock Star of the Art World" refuses to rest on his laurels, opting instead to focus on his artistic integrity. And having a good time, of course."I never, ever worry about whether or not something will sell," he said. "I just do my own thing and enjoy it. I don't even care if I'm remembered for my art or not. I just want to do as much as I can while I can. Some people are born pretty, some are born athletic. God dropped a paintbrush in my hand. It's my responsibility to do something with my gift."All in all, Saturday's event was a huge hit with everyone in attendance. And believe it or not, Godard enjoyed himself, too."I'd absolutely love to come back," said Godard. "And I promise to be better than Santa Claus - I'll come more than once a year."
