Foresthill’s Leyba is CVCL Co-MVP

In a vote with the Central Valley California League's baseball and softball coaches, a large number of Foresthill Wildfire players added "First Team All-League" to their respective resumes. Foresthill senior Justin Leyba was named the CVCL Co-MVP along with Woodland Christian's Jordan Trammell. The top two hitters in the league had very similar numbers in 2019. Leyba hit a league-leading .552 with three homers and 29 RBIs while adding a league-high 16 doubles. Trammell, meanwhile, hit .516 with four home runs and a league-leading 33 runs driven in for the CVCL champion Cardinals. Leyba and Trammell were two of just 16 qualified players to hit over .500 in the Sac-Joaquin Section. Leyba, who is headed to Sierra College next school year, was second among Division VII players in batting average. Other Wildfire baseball players included on the CVCL First Team were juniors Paul Arnett and Nick Lechner and sophomore Anthony Packard. Arnett was second on the team with a .397 average with 18 RBIs from the second base position. Lechner, the starting shortstop, hit .371 with 19 RBIs and had a 1.72 earned run average in 20 1/3 innings. Packard, meanwhile, went 5-2 on the bump with a 2.10 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 33 1/3 innings. He also hit .344 with three dingers and 28 RBIs for Foresthill. Forest Lake Christian's Matt LaRocca was named to the CVCL First Team for the Falcons, who went 3-8 overall this season. On the softball diamond, Foresthill boasted four players on the CVCL First Team, including seniors Cassie Ralston, Amber Mackay, junior Maddie Vandagriff and sophomore McKayla Lechner. Mackay (1.08) and Ralston (1.14) were 1-2 in the league in ERA. Ralston led the league with 146 strikeouts and had 10 games of double-digit Ks along with three no-hitters. She also hit .500 with six triples and 25 RBIs. Mackay's .635 batting average was tops in the CVCL and a Top-10 mark in the Sac-Joaquin Section. She also struck out 55 in 26 innings for the Wildfires. Vandagriff hit .420 and scored a team-high 29 runs. Lechner, who was also a Second-Team All-CVCL basketball player, hit .412 and led the team with 28 RBIs. Lexi Wheeler was the lone Forest Lake Christian representative. Woodland Christian's Jordyn Hutchins won the league MVP for softball after hitting .580 with nine home runs, seven doubles, five triples and 31 RBIs. She also went 11-1 in the circle with a 1.83 ERA and 126 strikeouts.
