William Jessup University student interns this summer for U.S. Rep. McClintock in Washington, D.C.

While most students are enjoying the slower pace of summer, William Jessup University senior Katie Camerer is busy on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., serving as Congressman Tom McClintock's summer intern. She attended the recent Mueller hearing, has met lawmakers and conducted tours of the Capitol during her first several weeks. The internship ends Aug. 30. Known for her high energy and "go-getter" attitude, Camerer isn't one to sit still for long. For the past year, she has been busy serving as student body president at William Jessup. In addition to being a full-time student, she is an intern representing Placer County Supervisor Bonnie Gore and works as a policy analyst for Retirement Security Initiative, a bipartisan advocacy group for fair and sustainable pensions. Camerer first met McClintock and learned about the opportunity to serve as his intern during the Republican National Convention in 2018. "Supervisor Gore introduced me to Congressman McClintock and he told me about his internship program. Basically, as soon as our conversation was over, I decided to apply for the program," Camerer said. Camerer began her internship June 24 at the Rayburn Building on Capitol Hill, one of three buildings constructed for the United States House of Representatives. During the 10-week program, she attends Congressional hearings and briefings, leads Capitol tours, answers phones, sorts mail and assists legislative staff with their research. Camerer said that she is gaining a first-hand understanding of the legislative process and the many other functions of a Congressional office. She has met many Congressmen, including Reps. Dan Crenshaw and Doug La Malfa. She has helped on research for Congressman McClintock with pension legislation, especially H.R. 397, a multi-employer pension act. "I was able to be one of the 35 members of the public allowed to sit in during the Mueller hearing, which was one of the most anticipated hearings since Clinton and Monica Lewinsky, Camerer said. "That has been the highlight." Before leaving for her internship, Camerer finished nine units of summer school at William Jessup University to help reach her goal of graduating early this December. "Jessup has given me the resources I need to be able to do my jobs well and to be selected for this opportunity," Camerer said. "From the relevant content of my coursework and the support I've received from my professors to the hands-on experiences I've been able to participate in, Jessup has helped to lay the foundation for my future." The 21 year old is planning to enroll in law school after graduating from Jessup, and after practicing law, hopes to become a law professor. "When I was just 7 years old, my parents used to tell me I should be a lawyer because I was so good at defending my point," Camerer said. "Since the time I was a junior at Lincoln High School in Mr. Freestone's Junior American History class, I've known I have a passion for public policy and going to law school is a natural fit."
