New vegan café offers variety

The newest addition to Folsom Historic District is here and it's good. Brick House Café, which opened its doors on Sept. 13, is an organic vegan and vegetarian café restaurant on Sutter Street. Owner Nick Martin, a Folsom native, said when he goes grocery shopping, he buys organic ingredients and wanted to offer that option to people for fast, over-the-counter items. "We're mainly take out, and we use raw ingredients. For example, our nacho cheese is made with cashews and red bell peppers," he said. "We don't use any processed stuff." Brick House Café's menu consists of a variety of items, such as bowls, salads, nachos, burgers, smoothies, juices, as well as coffee and more. Some of the popular items include the nutty burger, the fiesta bowl, the coco banana smoothie and all of the juices, Martin said. "My favorite thing is seeing all the positive feedback from everyone, especially the meat eaters – they really like it," Martin said. "I like seeing people come back for the second and third time, ordering the same thing over again. That reassures we're making a good product and people like it." Martin, 31, chose the Folsom Historic District to open up his café because he likes the atmosphere of the street. He also owns Rose Gold Tattoo, located on Sutter Street as well. "It's a cool hangout spot where you can get healthy food," he said. "I really like this area and it didn't really have a healthy café, so I decided to open it." While Brick House Café has limited seating, Martin said in the future they will be adding extra seating as well as expanding their menu and their hours.
