'Everyone Counts' documentary on 10 Auburn deaths to show a third time at State Theatre

Calvin Kelley's death in 2015 literally hit home with Auburn business owner Lisa McNabb. Her son, Justin Haskin, was best friends and bandmates with Kelley. "Calvin was the soft singer and drummer. Justin was the screamer," McNabb said Thursday of the duo, who played with "Before You Fall," which she described as a post-hardcore group that played locally and went on tour once, "to like five states," she said. "I bought them a van, and they went on the road." Kelley died Nov. 21, 2015, four weeks after he was found "under a train," McNabb recalled. Kelley's death was one of 10 over the course of six years considered "suspicious" in the documentary "Everyone Counts," which will show for the third time Friday, March 13, at 7 p.m. at the State Theatre. Six men from the ages of 39 to 61 were found in an Auburn canal from Jan. 14, 2009, to Nov. 23, 2010. Three men and a woman were found within 200 yards of each other on a stretch of local railroad tracks over time through 2015, according to private investigators Larry DeMates of Auburn and Jim Goodrich of Rocklin. The victims are known as the "Auburn 10," though McNabb, DeMates and Goodrich say there were two more victims in 2018. Causes of death included accidental drowning, suicide and a probable heart attack, according to Goodrich. No arrests were made in any of the deaths. The documentary debuted last September to a packed house, and 60 more people were turned away, according to Christine Craft, a well-known area veteran TV journalist who interviewed parents of the victims and studied autopsy and police reports, "all those evidenciary things," she said. The second showing didn't sell out. "We felt it needs to be shown one more time," Craft said Thursday. Craft, DeMates, Goodrich and McNabb said Thursday an anonymous donor has put up a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in at least one case. "Somebody knows something," DeMates said.
