Placer track and field athletes climbing school leaderboards

A handful of Hillmen track and field athletes are climbing into the record books at Placer High School. After Thursday's Foothill Valley League dual at Oakmont, senior Isaiah Suggs jumped into Placer's top 10 in the history book. Not only did Suggs win the long jump at 19 feet, 2 inches, he also claimed the triple jump by touching 43-4, which puts him third in the Sac-Joaquin Section and eighth on the all-time leaderboard at Placer, a school that's been around for more than a century. "Placer track has had a fun and successful season so far," coach Amanda Roberts said. "We welcomed a new jumps coach, Placer grad Jalen Lewis, to the team and the jumpers have had a great year." Senior Kendra Pearson, who won Thursday's high jump at 4-10, also owns a 5-foot clearance this season, which is tied for seventh-best in school history. Junior Austin Wanlass pole vaulted 14-1 on May 1 at the Kays Ostrom Invitational, which placed him seventh in the Placer record book. The Placer boys team took down Oakmont 85-50, receiving additional wins from Nick Bodwell in the 400 (51.87), Vance Byer in the 800 (2:00.51), Wyatt Hamilton in the 3,200 (10:31.44), Ben Trickett in the shot put (41-7.5), Hayden Bose in the pole vault (9-0), Ryan Frank in the high jump (5-4) and Angelo Ramos in the discus (133-11). Ramos ranks eighth in the section with a 138-foot toss April 27. Despite a 76-54 loss Thursday, Placer's girls team received wins from Leah Booth in the 1,600 (5:37.53), Constance O'Neal in the 3,200 (12:15.62), Grace Wright in the 300 hurdles (52.52), Kyla Rector in the pole vault (9-0) and Rori Giguiere in the triple jump (28-7.75). Boys hoops up and down in FVL play this week The Hillmen took down Rio Linda 82-74 on Tuesday behind a strong tag-team performance from Jackson Lee (29 points, 12 rebounds, five steals) and Max Petrenko (28 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, three blocks). Garrett Dutro contributed 11 points, four boards, nine assists, two steals and two blocks. Ben Manley had eight points while Leo Garcia grabbed nine rebounds and three steals. On Thursday, Placer dropped to 2-2 in the Foothill Valley League with a 68-58 loss at Oakmont. Lee led the way with 16 points, six rebounds and three assists while Petrenko poured in 13 and Manley 10. Oakmont featured four players in double figures, led by freshman point guard Kevin Haupt Jr.'s 18, Edi Crno's 15, Julian Naibose's 13 and Dylan Agoncillo's 12 on four 3-pointers. Soccer high-scoring vs. Rio Linda The Placer girls defeated Rio Linda 4-0 on Tuesday with four players scoring: Emma Macon, Stacy Johnson, Lillian Nicholson and Giana Santori. Macon, Nicholson, Natalie Jack and Emily Pierce footed out assists. The Lady Hillmen moved to 4-3 in FVL play on freshman Ashlyn Doremus' first 80-minute shutout. The Placer boys also took down Rio Linda 5-3 win on Wednesday thanks to a hat trick from junior Lucas Summers. Jose Alonso and Justin Federico also netted goals for the Hillmen (2-3-2). Undrafted Capra signs with Packers Bypassed in the 2021 NFL Draft, former Placer offensive lineman Jacob Capra was signed by the Green Bay Packers. The 6-foot-5, 300-pounder completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Oregon before transferring to San Diego State, where he earned his Master's degree in homeland security while playing for the Aztecs. Capra, along with brothers Johnny and Joey, helped Placer spark a string of eight consecutive league championships from 2012-19.
