Auburn Symphony 'reopening' with documentary screening

To celebrate its "reopening" of plans for a new concert season in October, the Auburn Symphony is hosting a free screening of its documentary "Scaling the Heights" on Sunday, July 25, at 3 p.m. at the State Theatre. The documentary tells the story of the symphony's 2017 Mondavi Center performance of An Alpine Symphony, a tone poem for large orchestra by Richard Strauss. The program of the composition depicts the experiences of 11 hours, from daybreak to the following night, spent climbing an alpine mountain. "The symphony's performance of the Alpine Symphony at Mondavi was a remarkable achievement for a community orchestra," said symphony board president Stephanie Snyder. "The screening is our gift to the community for such wonderful support this past year, so seats are free but will need to be reserved in advance at our website. Join us for a warm and fun time – gathering again with old and new friends." Live music and no-host refreshments, starting at 2 p.m., set the stage for the screening. Serenade, a duo from the orchestra, will be performing and concessions will be open. "Our 'reopening party,' " said Anne Brown, symphony executive director, "gives everyone a chance to visit and watch our film on the big screen. And to greet Peter Jaffe one last time as our Maestro."
