10 Years Ago Sept. 22, 2011 Lory and Kevin Lehr have an enormous vegetable garden, along with 26 chickens, tucked away in one of the older sections of Granite Bay. "This place is a tribute to my great grandparents, Joseph and Katherine Ferraro, who owned Sequoia Market in Redwood City," Kevin Lehr said. Memorabilia from the market is on display at their chicken coop. Attending the Placer Buddhist Church's 47th annual Food Bazaar will be like travelling to Japan without leaving Placer County. Among the traditional Japanese desserts being offered are manju prepared by Misako Sugioka, Sumi Kozaiku and Nancy Oseto. Twins Brianna and Sydney Gilchrist visited their grandmother's, Nancy Chapel's, alpaca ranch in Loomis. The ranch is also open to the public during National Alpaca Farm Days. More than 200 people were waiting for the Krispy Kreme doughnut store in Roseville to open at 5:30 a.m. Their goal was to get their hands on the first Krispy Kreme doughnut produced in Roseville since 2006. Among those attending the grand opening were Del Oro High School students Lee Van Farowe and Bailey Harrison, along with Whitney High School's Gage Bort. Six local students awarded $500 scholarships in the 2011 Lions Club World of Talent contest were Alyssa Ray and Amy Ray of Rocklin, Aileen Carroll and Gabriella Shannon of Loomis, Ben Kaiser of Newcastle, and Alexandra Haynes of Granite Bay. A 1969 Del Oro High School graduate, Gary Davis, displayed his vintage 1957 BSA Gold Star motorcycle given to him by his friend, Ray Hensley. Davis had been in the movie and TV stunt business for about 39 years. After high school, Davis spent a couple of years jumping over cars with his motorcycle. On March 5, 1972, he jumped over 21 cars, beating Evel Knieval's 19-car record. In 1984, Davis worked as a stunt double for Jeff Bridges in the movie, "Against All Odds." It was a dangerous occupation; Davis broke his back when asked to jump a car in "Smokey and the Bandit II." He hit a ramp at 88 MPH and flew 165 feet through the air, still listed as the longest car jump in movies. 25 Years Ago Sept. 19, 1996 Navy Lt. Michael Osborn, son of Noel and Terri Osborn of Rocklin, received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal while serving with Strike Fighter Squadron 151, Naval Air Station, Lemoore. Navy Fireman Michael Ennis was serving on the aircraft carrier Carl Vinson in the Persian Gulf. The carrier provided air support for Air Force B-52 bombers, along with Navy and Air force units during cruise missile strikes against Iraq. Ennis' wife, Elisa, is the daughter of Charles and Mary Cook of Rocklin. Ralph and Nancy Okey celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary hosted by their daughters, Kim Sewell and Karen Dax, along with Tim Long. The couple were married in Alhambra and moved to Loomis 34 years ago. A new Burger King restaurant at the Raley's Center in Loomis is nearly ready to open under the management of Bob Edhardt. Former Loomis Mayor Gretchen Crespillo-McDowell is a candidate for Placer County Water Agency director for District 4. Placer School in Loomis was adopted by Sutter/CHS to assist in getting network wiring of the school and being connected to the Internet. Troop 12 Boy Scouts Mike Mont-Eaton, Matthew Gillum, Chris Obranovich and Thomas Hall helped flip pancakes at the Loomis Eggplant Festival. The Loomis Community Nursery School welcomed Rocky & Co. safety clowns, who are Rocklin Fire Department firefighters. The Placer Buddhist Church's 23rd annual Chicken Teriyaki Food Festival will feature Susan Yasuko Hashimoto performing the Japanese classical dance, Odori. Also featured will be Ikebana flower arrangements by Ritei Masuda. Winners of the Loomis Eggplant Fun Run by age groups: 6 to 10 Rese Childs, 11 to 13 Brian Senseri, 14 to 18 Eric Graft, 19 to 29 Jonathan Siegal, 30 to 39 Anthony Mileskj and Gina Ramirez, 40 to 49 Michael Garcia and Debra Reeds, and 50-plus Bob Ransford and Lois Hall. 50 Years Ago Sept. 30, 1971 Services were held for Mary P. Moore, 45, who died suddenly while visiting her parents in Lebanon, Indiana. She was active with the Del Oro High School Parents Club. Moore was the wife of "Cal" Moore, mother of Larry Moore and Jan Struble, all of Loomis. Army Private Larry G. Owens, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Owens of Penryn, completed eight weeks of basic training at the U.S. Army Infantry Training Center at Fort Polk, Louisiana. A winter 1971-72 flu epidemic is anticipated by health officials with flu shots recommended no later than October. Local Lions Club members will sell miniature white canes to support sight conservation projects. One of the symbols of the emancipation of the blind from dependency on others is the White Cane. Families of three or four with a monthly gross income of $310 or less qualify for a free lunch for school-age children. Dennis Tope is an addition to the Del Oro High School staff and will teach 3-D art and woodshop. In addition to his classroom assignments, Tope will be the cross-country track coach and assistant track and field coach. In squad competition during band camp for the Del Oro Marching Band, Susan Kondo's team were champions. Squad members were Diane Suzuki, Mary Jo Wells, Yvonne Sakatani, Michele Frank, Kora Okusu and Marsha Takahashi. Their reward was a steak dinner cooked by Band Captain Alan Yamashiro, assisted by Orlynda Siewert. 75 Years Ago May 1946 The Loomis Mens Club met at Williams Pond. Jess Gatt introduced the idea of getting a Memorial Hall through the efforts of the American Legion or Legion of Foreign wars. It would require a post here and 16 members are necessary to qualify. Another topic was the annexation of a new area called the Leak addition. For the first time in history, a carnival came to Loomis. It was located in the vacant lot between the bank and the post office. The first shipment of cherries made up of 14 campbell lugs of Chapman cherries left Loomis from the Pacific Fruit Exchange. The cherries were picked from the Mabel B. Ellen Ranch. Prizes, including nylons, were given away at the Loomis Grange Picnic held on the Boisa Ranch out of Rocklin. The Blue Fryer Cafe in Loomis opened after a few weeks' vacation under the management of Joseph Perez, a local boy who knows the ropes of culinary. Clothing from the local Red Cross was received in Austria. Recipients included children in hospitals and orphanages, along with victims of concentration camps. Democrats outnumber Republicans 2 to 1 in Placer County. Satako Makeshima is a new student in Mrs. Seales' eighth-grade class at Loomis School. Satako had attended the school in the lower grades before her family was evacuated in 1942. With Mother's Day approaching, the Loomis Variety Store offers perfume, Loomis Electric & Appliance-Silex Coffee Makers, and Chocolates from Nelthorpe & Son. Placer County's eight 4-H Clubs invite all farmers to the annual 4-H Farmers Picnic. (Standing Guard-oral histories) Tsugie "Rose" Takemoto and her husband returned to Penryn with daughter, Jean, and baby, Gordon, who was born in the Rohwer Relocation Center, Arkansas in 1944. They lived in Rose's family place, known as the Dairiki and Company grocery store, prior to being interred. Rose and her husband, "Doc" Takemoto, opened Main Drug Store in 1945.
