Grizzlies and Panthers win SFL and FVL titles

The Granite Bay High girls' golf team emerged victorious at the final 18-hole Sierra Foothill League tournament on Oct. 12 finishing with a team score of 365, 32 strokes lower than their prior 18-hole score on Sept. 21. Senior Anika Varma had the low individual round shooting a seven-under-par 65 with three eagles. Varma finished third in All-League points. The Grizzlies had two other golfers score even-par or better. Granite Bay will advance to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I tournament and attempt to win their sixth straight section championship at Rancho Murieta Country Club on Monday. All teams in the Sierra Foothill League shot under 450 on Oct. 12 and automatically qualified for the divisional tournament. Oak Ridge High finished second, scoring 416 while Whitney and Rocklin both shot 428. It was the Wildcats placing third as their sixth score of 100 bested the Thunder's sixth score of 106. Wildcats senior Kiana Kim finished with a team low 78 while fellow senior Tess Fernandez shot an 81. Kim ended up seventh in All-League points and Whitney finished fifth for the season in the Sierra Foothill League. "I'm really happy. The girls made a concerted effort and put in a lot of work this last month to qualify for divisionals," Whitney coach Michael Gimenez said. "It's a mental game playing in the wind and they stayed dialed in for 18 holes." The Thunder came in fourth and their low score came from sophomore Lexi Booras with a one-over-par 73. Coming in right behind her was senior Jessica Burdick shooting a 76. Rocklin tied for third-place in the Sierra Foothill League for the season. Booras finished fourth in the All-League individual standings while Burdick came in sixth. "It was a tough day in the wind and some of the girls fought through it and shot some of their better scores of the year," Thunder coach Michael Trejo said. Five shots behind Whitney and Rocklin were the Del Oro Golden Eagles finishing fifth at the tournament and sixth in the league. Senior Cami Tennison had the low score shooting 80 while fellow senior Delaney Smith was right behind her with an 82. Tennison finished ninth for individuals in the Sierra Foothill League. "It started off a bit rough, but I kept a positive attitude and was able to maintain it until the end and I'm pretty happy with that," Tennison said. Foothill Valley League The West Park Lady Panthers won the Foothill Valley League with an 18-0 record winning their final 18-hole tournament on Oct. 11 with a team score of 490, 61 strokes better than second-place Ponderosa. The low score of the tournament came from Panthers junior Reese Vallot shooting an 85 at Ancil Hoffman Golf Course. They went on to win their last nine-hole match the next day against Lincoln by 51 shots. "Winning a league championship is an incredible accomplishment and with such a young team consisting of almost all freshmen and sophomores the future could be very bright, but we want to enjoy this year with this group of girls and celebrate their accomplishments," coach Andrew Roberts said. Vallot, along with sophomore Lilly Smith and freshman Lillian Wallace, finished top six receiving All-League honors. The Panthers will play in the Division III tournament at Paradise Valley Golf Course in Fairfield on Monday. Oakmont High finished fifth at the 18-hole tournament and their low score came from junior Jeslyn Sun shooting 98 in harsh winds to finish third overall. Sun finished first-place in the Foothill Valley League with 221 points and she, along with sophomore Sophia Tun, will advance to the divisional tournament on Monday. "Overall, I am very proud of the effort the girls put forward this season," coach Richard Bueti said. "Many of them are relatively new to the game and they really embraced the game." Capital Valley Conference The Woodcreek Timberwolves finished second at their final 18-hole Capital Valley Conference tournament at River Oaks Golf Club on Monday, qualifying for the Division II tournament next Monday at The Reserve at Spanos Park. The team score of 463 was 27 strokes behind the first-place Inderkum Tigers. Devyn Oberbillig had the low score for Woodcreek shooting 88 and coming in fourth overall while Ellie Larson was right behind her with a 91 finishing tied for seventh. Larson and Natalie Ang earned first-team All-Conference honors while Oberbillig received second-team honors. Roseville High came in third-place 26 shots behind Woodcreek with a team score of 499 besting Bella Vista by a single stroke. Their low individual round came from Cali Fischer shooting 90 finishing sixth overall. Behind her was Tatiana Aguilera with a 96. Fischer and Aguilera, along with Cami Tucker, all individually qualified for the divisional tournament on Monday and received second-team All-Conference honors.
