10 Years Ago Dec. 1, 2011 There is no doubt that locally grown mandarins are delicious but they are also different from those grown in other regions. "During cool foothill nights, sugars are stored in the fruit. Higher sugar means sweeter fruit. Though taste is subjective, there is science to back it up," explained Cindy Fake, horticulture advisor. Local musician Steve Price, drummer for Pablo Cruise, and his wife, Nancy, hosted a blues concert and spaghetti feed to benefit the homeless. The Prices are passionate about helping those less fortunate. With the assistance of their friend and local blues singer, Dana Moret, they organized the "Be The Change" event for the Gathering Inn and Loaves and Fishes. A health and wellness education program will feature Cindy Soldano, naturopath, along with health, nutrition and medicine expert Dr. Pam Popper. The event will be held at the Flower Farm Events Center to benefit the Lucas Armand family. Lucas, a Del Oro High School freshman, suffered sudden cardiac arrest and remains hospitalized. Tsuda's Old Town Eatery in Auburn is a popular place to go for deli favorites. Owner Alexandra Carnahan took over the Flower Farm Cafe, along with handling events at the Flower Farm B&B. In addition to the cafe, John and Annie Bowler's Flower Farm includes a plant nursery. Also, the Bowlers and Carnahan are partnering with Casque Winery for a tasting room on the property. Adia Byrd and Kate Watkins were among the dancers from The Dance Gallery 2 in Roseville who performed in the Day Before Thanksgiving Parade in Loomis. Among those enjoying the parade were Samantha Milhous, Ben and Christian Santaella of Loomis and the Diamond family of Granite Bay. Olivia Sayad, Lucy Scogin, Annie Mishler and Moriah Scogin were among the performers for Del Oro High School's production of "Twas The Night Before Christmas." Children who brought a book to donate got to meet Santa prior to showtime. The books were given to the Kenyatta Children's Hospital in Kenya. Team member Sam Hazen visited the hospital and was struck by the lack of activities for children recovering at the hospital. 25 Years Ago Nov. 28, 1996 A memorial service was held for Marshall "Mike" Jonas, 53, a Sacramento native and a Loomis resident for 23 years. He was a pipefitter with Local No. 447 and owned a local welding business. An active member of the Auburn Jeep Club, he enjoyed Rubicon trips. Navy Seaman Erik Oberg, son of Lyn McCarty of Rocklin, completed basic training at Great Lakes, Illinois. The Rotary Club of Rocklin awarded $5,800 in grants to seven local and international programs. One recipient, Rotary Youth Exchange student Karien Wullink, was awarded $500 for the purchase of a saxophone. Rotarians Fred Kurzhals and John Nitta were active in the presentation. In a driving rain, the Del Oro football team was bounced out of the playoffs 30-19 by Oakdale. Loomis Mayor Bruce Lee announced that he would retire from the Town Council as a result of his election to a position on the Placer County Water Agency board of directors. A community blood drive was held in the name of Paul Yokote, who is in the hospital for gallbladder surgery. Hundreds of his friends, many being referred to as "Paul's Kids," are pulling for him to recover from surgery. Dr. Bryan Mayeda, DVM, was elected into the high honor of life membership in the American Association of Avian Pathologists (AAAP). Chartered in 1957, American Association of Avian Pathologists fosters excellence in poultry medicine. Born in 1922, Mayeda grew up on his parent's fruit farm in Loomis. His uncle, Kanematsu Igarashi, owned a major White Leghorn egg production farm in the 1920s. In his late teens as World War II erupted, Mayeda and his parents were incarcerated at the Tule Lake Relocation Center. After 11 months, Mayeda was released to work on a poultry farm in Michigan. Eventually, he graduated from Michigan State University with a DVM degree and a 2nd Lt. commission in the U.S. Army. 50 Years Ago Dec. 9, 1971 Services were held for Joji "George" Takemoto, 56, a Sacramento native and a Colfax resident for the past 10 years. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Kikuyo Takemoto of Loomis; brothers Hiroshi "Doc," Koso and Shiro Takemoto; and sister, Sumiko Kajimura of Lincoln. Masonic services were conducted for Milton Samuel Allen, 66, a Los Angeles native and a Newcastle-area resident for the past 21 years. He was a retired Chief Warrant Officer in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1927 to 1947. Allen was a retired electrician for the Southern Pacific Company in the Roseville shops and a member of the Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1682 of Roseville. Allen was a life member of the Cavite Lodge No. 2, F&AM in the Philippine Islands, the Consistory of Scottish Rite Masons in New York and the Ben Ali Shrine Temple in Sacramento. U.S. Air Force Captain Michael Houston participated in the Strategic Command's (SAC) elite combat competition at McCoy Air Force Base, Florida. His wife, Elaine, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Uyeda of Laird Road, Loomis. Navy Seaman Apprentice Dennis Klauck, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Kurahara of Loomis, graduated from basic training in San Diego. A sports swap meet will be held at St. Albans Country Day School in Roseville. The event is sponsored by the seventh- and eighth-grade student council. Ray Baumer of Hidden Valley, student chairman of special events, is in charge. The 1971 Sierra Bull Sale was a great success. Leak Angus Ranch of Loomis consigned the high-selling Angus bull, Mystic 6 of EL, which sold for $600. The top selling Polled Hereford was VR Goldmodes Mischief, consigned by Frank Vodopich of Lincoln and sold for $725. For the fifth consecutive year, PG&E planned for undergrounding of existing overhead electric lines in Northern California, including south Placer. One of the Top 5 musical hits for 1971 is "Go Away Little Girl" by Donny Osmond. 75 Years Ago July 1946 Services were held for Ed Kahou, 62, who made many friends in the area while working at Loomis Lumber Company. He left no known relatives. Local residents are used to the fine fruit grown in Placer County but some are not so lucky. The packing houses are busy shipping the terrific fruit to the Eastern markets and, yes, to less fortunate places and people. Parents of local kindergarten age children can sign a petition to have a kindergarten class next school term if there are 25 signers. Dr. Seth Law, Loomis veterinarian, worked most of an evening removing porcupine quills from two Chow dogs. Mr. Arthur Horn, brother of Fred Horn of Loomis, was found dead in his cabin on the American River. Local ranchers are worried about screw worms that are causing serious losses among their livestock. Surplus war goods to be sold at a Sacramento site include 2,480 miles of electrical wire. The aged of California receive $60 a month maximum pension. Lt. General Lucius Clay, deputy military governor of the American zone in Germany, granted pardons for the one million Nazis under 27 years of age. Pardons were granted in the belief that they were too young to realize what they were getting into when they became active Nazis. All were under the age of 14 when Hitler took over in 1933.
