LOOKING BACK From our archives; compiled by Howard Stitt 10 Years Ago Feb. 9, 2012 Principal Rick Judd, who is undergoing cancer treatment, received the Courage Award from the Loomis Union School District for the "courage to face the challenge; strength to fight hard for what you believe in; perseverance when it seems impossible; resilience and pride." Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in California. While youth flock to the sport, it has yet to translate to the high school or collegiate level here. Sierra Foothill Lacrosse filled its roster with local high school students. Native Americans invented the game throwing around a homemade ball and sticks made out of leather, cat guts and dead wood. Granite Bay resident Pam Tobin is running to represent District 4 on the Placer County Board of Supervisors. She will run against incumbent Kirk Uhler, who has held the post since 2006. School districts across the state have budget problems. Gov. Jerry Brown linked K to12 funding with a push for tax increases, not a popular idea with GOP lawmakers. The Loomis Union School District has to continue paring back. By several measures, the district has a good chance of going broke in 2014. The Union Pacific Railroad continues to replace wood ties with concrete ones in south Placer County. New rails are also being installed, using the 464 foot long TRT-909 unit. A local grandmother never doubted at first that it was her grandson in Buenos Aires recently on the phone, desperately asking her to wire him bail money. "I bought into it for a while. I called the Placer County Sheriff's Office and they suggested to check with my grandson's family." Of course, it was a scam and her grandson was not in Buenos Aires but in Chico. Patrons at the Valencia Club in Penryn watched the New York Giants defeat the New England Patriots, 21-17, in the Super Bowl. Local residents were asked, "What has been super about the Super Bowls?" Remington Mosburg, Loomis - "The Steelers winning and every other team winning, except the Green Bay Packers." 25 Years Ago Feb. 6, 1997 A private memorial service was held for Charles Hugh Jackson, 70, a Rawlins, Wyoming native and a Loomis resident for the past 29 years. He was a retired civil engineer for the California Department of Highways. A veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War 1I, Jackson was a member of the National Rifle Association and a graduate of University of California at Berkeley. Services were held for Benito Morillas, 77, a Hilo, Hawaii native and a Loomis resident for 75 years. He was the son of the late Francisco and Antonia Morillas. Services were conducted for George W. Swan, born Aug. 1, 1917 in Duluth, Minnesota. A 55-year resident of Newcastle, Swan served as an Army Staff Sergeant during World War II. He retired after 35 years with Pamella Truck Company. Loomis Fire personnel Scott Lombardi, Coral Byng and John Clark were among those holding the Boot Drive. The funds from the event benefited the Pacific Firefighters Burn Institute. Penryn resident Holly Dowling, Miss Placer County for 1996, will relinquish her crown during the upcoming Placer County Fair. Longtime columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle, Herb Coen, died. Top winners of the Loomis School District Geography Bee were Blake Morillas, Bobby Halvorson, Randall Gentry, Spencer Longhofer, Steven McGrath, Joel Bosserman and Justin Walstad. The Loomis Basin Heritage Group set in motion plans to make the old Blue Anchor fruit packing shed into a multi-purpose event center. The site is located behind Christensen's Saddlery (the historic Law Brothers building). At the Loomis Boy Scout Troop 12 Court of Honor, special recognition went to Chris Pike and Doug Worley for completing community service projects required for the Eagle rank. Chris Pike, along with Joel Nitta, were also recognized for achieving the "God and Country" award. The flooding caused by the winter's rains might impact Placer County property values and resulting property taxes, according to County Assessor Bruce Dear. A property-tax relief program allows county assessors to recognize a loss in value of property resulting from a calamity if the damage exceeds $5,000. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reported 66 people in Placer County who were displaced by the floods received $116,000 in assistance. 50 Years Ago Feb. 10, 1972 Word was received of the death of Lewis Clark Wetmore, 65, in Springfield, Missouri. He came to Placer County as a young man and lived in Loomis for a number of years, working as a welder. Navyman Steven Baker, son of Joseph Baker of Loomis, graduated from recruit training at the Naval Training Center at San Diego. Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Richard Garton, son of Mrs. E. Lillian Kent of Loomis, was promoted to his present rank during ceremonies at the 12th Coast Guard District Headquarters in San Francisco. Navy Seaman Eric Brumbaugh, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Brumbaugh and husband of the former Miss Cindy Morales of Loomis, graduated from the Basic Underwater Demolition Team and Sea Air Land Training Course at the Naval Amphibious School at Coronado, California. Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Michael Faulk, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Faulk and a 1969 graduate of Oakmont High School, completed Yeoman School at the Coast Guard Training Center at Governor's Island, New York. Congressman Harold "Bizz" Johnson nominated 10 outstanding young men, including Lyle Gates of Loomis, to compete for the principal appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy. The Gary Kaveney orchard on Horseshoe Bar Road in Loomis was the site for a fruit tree-pruning demonstration. Sue Stack, Ken Kitada, Jean Mulder, and Ron Dykstra of the Del Oro High School Ecology Club are among the club members collecting aluminum cans as a fund-raiser. Bill Fullerton, 4-H Club member, reported the Sheep Medalists from Placer County would hold a field day at the Roseville Fair Grounds. It is the 175th anniversary of the most famous ship in American history, the Constitution (also known as Old Ironsides). The 44-gun frigate was launched in 1797. As Commodore Edward Preble's flagship, she helped to bombard Tripoli in 1804. In a battle off of Sandy Hook, New Jersey, she destroyed the British frigate Guerriere early in the War of 1812. 75 Years Ago September 1946 The Eureka Union Elementary School will open with an addition to the 2-room school. With enrollment around 100 pupils, two more rooms will be added. Spare Stamp Number 51 in Ration Book 4 is valid for 5 pounds of sugar throughout 1946 in spite of the rumors that "warehouses are bulging with sugar." Those stories originate largely in areas where beet sugar is grown. An urgent appeal was made to rural women to continue fat salvage. Contracts were drawn for the United Kingdom to purchase 11 million pounds of dried whole eggs from the United States. Roseville Ice & Beverage Company, owned by Owen Leavitt and Harold Short, services stoves and furnaces as well as delivers stove and diesel oils. A University of California chemist said that atomic power will be used to convert wastelands such as Lower California into habitable areas. Over 500 people attended the county wide 4-H Club Fair with exhibits by Penryn, Ophir,and Loomis clubs, among others. Guy Hamberg of Loomis won the 1st-place prize ribbon on an entry of pigs. As the fruit season draws to a close, Southern Pacific Agent E.S. Leavitt reported 1,194 cars of fruit were shipped from the Loomis train station. A 500-pound registered Duroc pig was received from the corn belt by George Coughran of Loomis. The bred gilt will farrow soon. In a lion hunt near Georgetown, a couple of local sportsmen killed a large mother mountain lion and her cub. History has shown that big wars were often followed by a series of little wars. On September 1, 1939 the Nazis invaded Poland and World War II got underway and ended six years later, almost to the day. Shortly after the fall of Japan, there was considerable shooting in French Indo-China, a civil war in China, and bloodshed in India and Palestine.
