American River endurance run returns Saturday

This Saturday, athletes and ultra-runners are headed to the into town to participate in the Altra American River 50-Mile Endurance Run (AR50) that begins at Folsom Lake. The historic and second-largest 50-mile endurance run in the United States is returning for its 43rd year. The prestigious race event brings together veterans, first-timers and runners traveling from across the country as well as local spectators who line the route in various areas to cheer them on. The event features two epic races on Folsom's most scenic trails. In addition to the Altra American River 50-Mile Endurance Run, the event will also feature a 25-mile event, AR25, beginning at Beals Point and finishing in Auburn. "Whether you are attempting your first 50-miler or simply seeking a personal best, this race is for you," said Julie Fingar, race director. This year, 79 women and 44 men are registered for the AR25, with 65 women and 127 men participating in the full Altra American River 50-Mile Endurance Run. Altra American River 50-Mile Endurance Run begins at Folsom Point at the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Athletes will attempt their fastest race with the Folsom Lake sparkling in the background as they begin their 50-mile journey on single-track trails. The course travels over the Lake Natoma Crossing bridge, reaches the American River Bike Trail and goes up to Hazel Bluffs. At Beals Point, the 25-milers will start their portion of the race and the 50-milers will continue to push through the second half of their race. Runners will continue to test their physical and mental abilities from Granite Bay State Park, home of the Pioneer Express Trail, and to Dowdin's Post, where the trail travels to the infamous "Dam Wall." Runners begin the dramatic climb to the summit and are greeted by the "Party at Last Gasp." Highlights of the Altra American River 50-Mile Endurance Run include: · 78 runners will attempt their first 50-miler. · This year's Altra American River 50-Mile Endurance Run welcomes back Tim Twietmeyer, veteran Altra American River 50-Mile Endurance Run runner and long-time supporter of NorCalUltras, who has participated in the race 41 times. · Bill Finkbeiner has run 34 Altra American River 50-Mile Endurance Runs and is also the only person to have run all 32 Way Too Cools (WTC), representing an impressive double header streak as Way Too Cools and Altra American River 50-Mile Endurance Run always take place four to five weeks apart in March and April, respectively. · Hunter Konvalin is the youngest registered Altra American River 50-Mile Endurance Run runner at 18 years old. · Breese White is the most senior registered Altra American River 50-Mile Endurance Run runner at 74 years old. · Todd Sears is traveling the farthest distance to participate, hailing from Vermont.
