South Placer Boys' Golf roundup: Roseville and Rocklin win respective league 18-hole tournaments

Area high school boys' golf teams recently played in their first 18-hole league tournaments of the season and have four nine-hole matches left to play following spring break. Here's a look into how all teams have recently performed. Capital Valley Conference The Roseville Tigers won the first 18-hole league tournament of the season with a team score of 390 at River Oaks Golf Course on March 28 and Carter Jones was the low individual with a one-under-par 70. Roseville went on to defeat Woodcreek and defeated River Valley on April 7 shooting a 191, their season low at Sierra View Country Club. On April 5, the Tigers faced Antelope High at Cherry Island Golf Course and shot a three-under-par 182 as a team. All six players broke 40 for Roseville. "This is by far the best boys' golf team I have coached at Roseville High School since becoming the boys' varsity coach in 2008-2009, so it has been a very fun and exciting season especially since the boys haven't had a normal golf season in over two years," coach Corey Fukuman said. "They are all capable of shooting a low score on any given day, but most importantly, they are also a great group of young men who have fun and support each other at all times." The Tigers will face Yuba City in their next match on Tuesday. Woodcreek High finished second in the first 18-hole tournament with a team score of 420. In their nine-hole match against Roseville on March 31, the Timberwolves lost 191-196 at Sierra Pines Golf Course. Ethan Allred led the way for Woodcreek High with a 37 while Ethan Moon shot a 38. Chase Yukawa and Dominic Panish were right behind at 39 and 40, respectively. The Timberwolves will face Antelope in their next match on April 21. Sierra Foothill League Rocklin High won the first Sierra Foothill League 18-hole tournament, shooting 373 as a team, and beating out Granite Bay High by seven strokes. Junior Luke Price had the low round for the Thunder with a 70 while Josh Leiker shot a 71. "I have been putting in a lot of time making slight swing changes to improve my ball striking specifically with my irons," Price said. "It's rewarding to see the hard work start to pay off. I'm also trying to be more patient on the course, which has allowed me to minimize my mistakes and capitalize on scoring opportunities. Our teams' goal this year is to make it to the State Championship." The Thunder followed up their first-place finish with a win against Oak Ridge on March 31 where Price had the low score of 35. Their only nine-hole loss was against Granite Bay on March 22 when the Grizzlies won 191-194 with sophomore Garrett Harrison shooting the low round of 35. Del Oro shot 440 as a team at the first 18-hole tournament. Whitney defeated Del Oro 175-191 in a nine-hole match April 7 after losing to Rocklin on April 5. League action will resume on Tuesday when the Wildcats face Folsom, Granite Bay faces Rocklin and Del Oro hosts Oak Ridge. Foothill Valley League The West Park Panthers finished third out of seven teams with a team score of 458 at the first 18-hole tournament of the season at Ancil Hoffman Golf Course on March 28. They were led by junior Carter Roane, who shot an 85 while his brother Cohen was two strokes behind with an 87. Oakmont High came in tied for fourth at 465 but freshman Jonathan Miller had the low individual score of the day in the tournament with a four-over-par 76. The Vikings recently faced the Panthers in a nine-hole match on April 5 with West Park coming away with a 227-233 win. Miller led the way once again for Oakmont with a 39 while Marcus Castillo shot a 43. The Vikings will face Placer, who finished second in the 18-hole tournament, on Tuesday while the Panthers play Ponderosa, which won the tournament with a team score of 426. Valley Christian Academy The Lions finished in third-place at a Sacramento Metropolitan Athletic League tournament at Peach Tree Golf and Country Club in Marysville on March 29. Valley Christian Academy came in third out of five teams in the nine-hole contest with a team score of 294 and were behind Sacramento Adventist and Sacramento Country Day. Sophomore Jackson Meyers led the way with a 44 in the event. Five boys and two girls are on the Lions team with most being new to the game, including Meyers. Their next match will be at Rancho Solano Golf Course in Fairfield on April 25.
