Authorities determine driver not at fault in pedestrian death of Anthony Williams

News Release: Statement from Placer County Executive Officer Todd Leopold With profound sadness, I can now publicly acknowledge that I was the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident that resulted in the death of Anthony Williams on March 19, 2022. My words and emotions cannot adequately express my profound grief and sadness. I am heartbroken for the loss of this young man and extend my sincere condolences to Mr. Williams' family, friends, and all of those impacted by this tragic accident. Many individuals have questioned why I didn't provide an official response to media requests for identification of the driver. Unfortunately, I could not comment on the pending investigation and certainly did not want to be perceived, in any way, as attempting to influence the outcome of the Rocklin Police Department's investigation. At all times, I balance my respect for the investigative process while also providing transparency to you, our valued staff, as well as to our valued public. Now that the Rocklin Police Department has completed the investigation, I acknowledge the great suffering of Mr. Williams' family, friends and all who have been impacted by the accident. Sincerely, Todd Leopold Rocklin Police determine driver not at fault in pedestrian death of Anthony Williams The Rocklin Police Department completed its investigation Tuesday afternoon into the collision resulting in the pedestrian death of Inderkum high school senior Anthony Williams on March 19 after receiving the Placer County Sheriff/Coroner's Office's final report. A vehicle struck Williams while he was walking in the Lonetree Boulevard and Adams Drive roadway about 8:30 p.m. March 19, according to Rocklin Police, and he died at Sutter Roseville Medical Center from his injuries. Williams, 18, played basketball for Inderkum High School and the Youth Basketball Academy in Rocklin. He also attended school in the Rocklin Unified School District before attending Inderkum High School his senior year. The Rocklin Police Department determined that the driver in the collision is not at fault and that no criminal charges will be requested after a thorough review of the evidence and witness accounts, according to a department news release Wednesday. Rocklin Police said per Vehicle Code §20012, the accident report containing the full investigation can be released "to any person who may have a proper interest therein, including, but not limited to, the driver or drivers involved, or the guardian or conservator thereof, the parent of a minor driver, the authorized representative of a driver, or to any named person injured therein, the owners of vehicles or property damaged thereby, persons who may incur civil liability, including liability based upon a breach of warranty arising out of the accident, and any attorney who declares under penalty of perjury that he or she represents any of the above persons." Any of the people described can obtain a copy of the accident report by contacting the Rocklin Police Records Unit at 916-625-5400 or coming into the Rocklin Police Department and filling out an Application for Release of Public Records, according to the news release. "The Rocklin Police Department extends our condolences to everyone impacted by this tragic event," the release stated.
