Woodcreek's Maliyah Lawson sets up GoFundMe for softball showcases

Woodcreek High School's Maliyah Lawson was one of the top players for the Timberwolves this past season with a .362 batting average and 19 stolen bases. Lawson was also one of the two main pitchers for the Timberwolves and finished her junior year with a 2.44 earned run average and 87 strikeouts in 66 innings pitched. The Timberwolves finished third in the Capital Valley Conference and won their first round playoff game before losing to Del Oro High in the Sac-Joaquin Section quarterfinals. Now, Lawson is looking to showcase her talents to a number of Division I and II colleges and universities prior to her senior year in hopes of being offered an athletic scholarship. This summer, she will attend three different showcases in Los Angeles and one in Colorado. Lawson, 17, has been playing softball for 10 years and is the oldest of four children in the family. She is raised primarily by her mother who works two jobs to keep a roof over their heads, she said. These showcases and college campus visits will come at an expense, which is why Lawson recently set up a GoFundMe page to help with costs of hotels, plane tickets, gas and college exposure camps. Lawson is currently at $365 of her $10,000 goal.
