Roseville's Carter Jones wins First Tee Sierra View Junior Tournament

The First Tee – Greater Sacramento had its 12th tournament of the golf season Monday at Sierra View Country Club in Roseville and Carter Jones finished first in the 16- to 18- year-old age division with a three-under-par round of 69. "I think that my short game was good and even though I wasn't hitting it that good, I scrambled really well," Jones said. "Over the spring, I worked out some kinks in my swing and over the summer, everything has come together and I'm really playing better." Jones recently finished his senior season at Roseville High where the Tigers made it all the way to the Masters Tournament at Elkhorn Golf Club. Jones also earned All-Capital Valley Conference honors. Woodcreek High's Ethan Allred placed second with a two-under-par 70, Granite Bay High's Ryan Atkinson finished third at 71 and Lincoln High's Jack Fidler was fourth at 73. Other South Placer athletes who finished in the Top 10 included Andrew Goozen, Aidan Sweeney and Steven Kent. Trenton Stuart from Folsom won the overall award for the boys with a six-under 66. Oakmont High's Jonathan Miller finished first in the 14- to 15-year-old division with a two-over-par round of 74. Miller was one-under through his first 11 holes but made three bogeys down the stretch. Miller recently completed his freshman season with the Vikings where he won the Foothill Valley League Most Valuable Player award. "I haven't played as much golf over the last two weeks because I was on vacation, so the swing wasn't all the way there today but my chipping and putting definitely propelled me to the first-place finish," Miller said. Chase Yukawa and Braden Cales both tied for third with each golfer shooting a 77 while Ryan Kim finished seventh with an 82. In the 12- to 13-year-old division, Tre Garza of Roseville tied for fourth with a 77, along with Raymond Rebell from Loomis and Cody Chapman from Lincoln. On the girls' side, Amelia Greenlee of Lincoln won the overall award with an even-par round of 72 while Rocklin High's Jessica Burdick finished first in the 15- to 18-year-old division with a 78. Burdick recently graduated from Rocklin High and was named the female athlete of the year for the Thunder playing both basketball and golf. Burdick was playing in a boot at the tournament as she sprained her ankle playing basketball six weeks ago. "I think my drives overall today were great and I had some easy irons into the greens but toward the back, the shots got harder hitting on some upslopes," Burdick said. "My faith has helped me a lot these past couple of months with my golf game being injured and I've been able to focus and take it one shot at a time." Burdick will play golf at William Jessup University starting in the fall. Her Thunder teammate Kate Phelan tied for fifth at the tournament with an 87 while Lauren Schmidt tied for 10th with a 97. In the 12- to 14-year-old division, Roseville's Arden Han-Wei tied for first with a 77 while Sakura Watanabe placed third at 78. Serene Kim of Granite Bay tied for sixth with an 85 and Lucy Jerde of Roseville was eighth at 86. Following Jerde were Hailey Peterson of Granite Bay with an 87 and Roseville's Emerson Kim with an 88.
