Falcons lock down Trojans, 69-29

Anytime a basketball team can hold an opponent to single digit point totals in three of a game's four quarters there's a pretty good chance that the defensive aggressor will notch a victory.That's exactly what happened Tuesday night on the road as the Colfax Falcons varsity boys team trekked to North Section opponent Durham and returned home with a 69-29 win.A total of 12 different players found the scoring column for the Falcons who led 22-10 after a quarter and 48-16 at the halftime break over a Trojans squad that came into the game with a record of 1-2.Colfax, now 4-1 on the season, was led offensively by Ryan Salmonson who poured in 17 points and snared six rebounds. Chase Mosier followed with 13 points while Justin Witt added nine.Also finding the scoring column for the winners were Ben Buell with eight points, Joey Jergo with six, Austin Oberg four, Ryan McCarthy three, Robert O'Connell, Tom Baldoni, Joey Rooker and D.J. Guiles all with two each and Kyle Greer with one. Colfax plays Palma of Salinas at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the Breaker Classic at Pacific Grove.In other Colfax sports news:Colfax JVs 42 Durham 36The Falcons shook off the effects of the two-hour trip Tuesday to Durham and played a strong second half to notch the victory. Trailing, 18-12, at halftime, Colfax out-pointed the Trojans, 23-14, in the third quarter to take control of the contest.Luke Beninga's 15 points led the Falcons' attack. Also scoring were Austin Young with six points, Will Buell and Kyle Fowler with six each, Luke Ramseth with five and Sam Quinlan with two.Colfax's JVs play Forest Lake Christian at 3:30 p.m. today in the Del Oro JV Tournament. Dixon tops Lady Falcons A furious fourth quarter rally wasn't enough to lift the Colfax High girls basketball over the hump Tuesday night.Trailing 43-28 entering the final canto, the Lady Falcons out-pointed host Dixon, 17-8, in the final eight minutes but still fell short in the non-league test, 51-45.The loss left the Lady Falcons with a 0-2 mark going into this weekend's Oroville Tournament. Colfax will tip off tournament play today at 5 p.m. against Las Plumas.Colfax was led by Cassandra Campbell and Audrey Lewis each with 13 points. Michelle Walker added 12 points and seven rebounds. Also scoring were April Littlejohn with four points and Hailey Biles with three.In JV action, Sara Davidson and Mariah Turcotte both scored eight points but the Lady Falcons (2-3) dropped a 42-33 decision. Cassy Harrison and Torri Henry contributed four and three points respectively to the offense.JV Girls top Placer for consolationColfax's JV girls basketball team captured consolation honors at last weekend's Roseville Tournament by defeating Placer, 57-38, Saturday afternoon.Hailey Biles' 19 points and 11 points and eight rebounds from Haighly Lis sparked the Colfax win. Sara Davidson contributed eight more points and 10 rebounds to the victory.Colfax also defeated Mesa Verde, 62-13, in the second rounds at the tournament with Torri Henry connecting for 17 points and coming up with six steals. Davidson followed in the scoring column with nine points.Colfax's JVs play Las Plumas today at 5 p.m. in the Oroville Tournament.
