Oakmont struggles as Davis powers to 38-13 victory

Football is a game of inches, and pounds. The 1-1 Oakmont High School football team came into a hot, muggy Dewey Halden Field and battled like Vikings before falling to Davis Senior High 38-13 on Thursday in Davis. The Blue Devils looked nothing like an 0-2 team that lost by 70 points to Granite Bay. They were solid, sound and fast and looked like a Division II club. "We knew that we were outweighed," Oakmont head coach Jake Messina said. "You can make a hundred different excuses, but at the end of the day, our job was to stop them, and we couldn't. We had to move the ball, and we couldn't, at least not effectively." It did appear to be a David and Goliath match up, only this time Goliath had the slingshot. The Vikings went three and out on their opening possession and punted. Davis' Daimyun Luevano fielded the kick and raced 67 yards into the end zone two minutes into the game. It looked as if the Blue Devils would tack on another TD in the first quarter, but it was called back. For the rest of that first quarter, the clubs pounded each other to no avail. Then opportunity knocked for the Vikes when Mac Hughes recovered a fumble on Davis' 28-yard line. Three plays later, the visitors closed the gap with a 24-yard strike from quarterback Bryson Bradford to Gavin Ferris for six. After their point-after kick failed, some of the wind went out of the Norsemen's sails. In the second quarter, the Blue Devils added a touchdown on a 10-yard rush by Cole Broussard for a 14-6 halftime lead. Davis finished the half with 104 yards rushing. The Vikes totaled 31. Oakmont held an edge in passing with 64 yards and one TD, but Bradford was twice picked. The Blue Devils' Braulio Acevedo hit on three passes for 33 yards. But the third quarter was where Davis dominated up front by scoring three times in less than three minutes. The home club capped its scoring in the fourth quarter on an 18-yard rush to lead 38-6. But Oakmont refused to go away. With 8:03 remaining, the Vikings went 74 yards in nine plays to score on an 8-yard pass from Bradford to Ferris. Bryan Garcia added the PAT for the final tally. "The reality is that we're young. We're starting a ton of sophomores. We're not very big," Messina said. "And so our run game that was totally there last week was totally ineffective this week. We just have to get better. We have to figure it out."
