Timberwolves remain undefeated with win over Wildcats

The Woodcreek High Timberwolves girls' soccer team defeated Whitney High 2-1 on Tuesday night to progress to 3-0 on the season. Woodcreek High did a solid job of controlling possession in the first half and created multiple opportunities. One of those chances came early in the third minute when junior Gabbie Bueno crossed it to senior Lexi Schroeder who put it in the back of the net. Schroeder is leading the Lady Timberwolves with six goals in her first three matches this season. "My speed of play is contributing to my success because it's easy to get around players quickly and take advantage of them and then finding through balls or balls in behind," Schroeder said. "Our defense is pretty aggressive; we're first to the ball and win 50/50 balls." The Lady Timberwolves totaled seven shots with five on goal in the first half while limiting the Wildcats to only one shot. After struggling to keep possession early, the Lady Wildcats created chances in the second half and finished with 10 shots and seven on target. Woodcreek High was still able to score its second goal of the night from a strike by junior Kylena Chavez in the 65th minute. However, Wildcats junior Lauren Hunter answered right back with a 32-yard strike in the 67th minute. "I told the girls that I loved the second half; we were first to the ball, took shots, played together and communicated well," Wildcats coach Ana Jones said. "The one thing we are really lacking right now is finishing. We get through balls that can be too heavy. We played more composed in the second half but today we talked way too much about Woodcreek coming in instead of worrying about ourselves, which killed us. We were flat and the turnovers, I don't even want to count them." There was a nasty head-to-head collision in the 44th minute between Woodcreek High's Ellie David and Whitney High's Emily Farley. After a few minutes, both players were able to walk off the field with assistance. The loss was the first for the Wildcats this season as they are currently 2-1-6. They will play their next game on Thursday after press time against Vista Del Lago and face Pitman High at home on Tuesday. "In preseason, we play teams like this for us to get better and compete when it comes to league play," Jones said. The Timberwolves outscored their first two league opponents 16-1 and continue Capital Valley Conference action on Friday against Antelope High. "We just need to keep playing how we are and play direct to the feet while not panicking and continue to score," Schroeder said.
