Reader input: Celebration of Life to honor 'Spud' DeJarnette

In February, we lost a treasured personal and community friend, Monroe "Spud" DeJarnette, who had recently relocated to Oregon to be closer to family. Over the years, he worked hard in service clubs, led the Chamber of Commerce, supported the restoration of the Auburn State Theatre and rebuilt trails. Thirty-five years ago, he passionately laid out his vision and solidly established the still-vibrant Auburn Symphony Orchestra, where he played clarinet until 1999. In 2000, he was recognized with the coveted Vernon McCann Award for community leadership. On behalf of Monroe's family and friends, please join us as we honor his time with us in a Celebration of Life at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at Pioneer United Methodist Church, 1338 Lincoln Way, reception immediately following. Bob Snyder Auburn A reminder about Senior Center Thank you Auburn Journal for your continued service. I appreciate being able to hold a newspaper in my hand and read local news. And I have appreciated reading Rosalie Wohlfromm's reminder ("Senior Center needs help from county," Auburn Journal, April 29, page A4) of what we have paid and may no longer be able to for a Senior Center. I remember the space and many services provided when it was at DeWitt. Then, the space was to be sold to Costco, which didn't happen. The next Senior Center cost $6,000/month, and the current $4,000. I have never understood how Placer County could abandon senior services and the $1/year rental. Thank you, Rosalie, for reminding us. And please, Placer County, be your former self. Arlene Bouman Applegate Journal needs to do better A recent article in your publication repeatedly used the term "Latinx" to describe the students of Rock Creek School ("Rock Creek families retain legal representation," Auburn Journal, April 19, page A3). I wonder if the writers of the Journal have stopped to consider that "Latinx" is not a Spanish word and is highly offensive to all but a very, very tiny minority of Spanish speakers. The proper Spanish term when referring to a mixed group of people from Latin America is "Latino." Do better, please. Muchas gracias. Rebecca Deniston Rocklin
