35th annual Clay Day canceled, due to weather

The 35th annual Clay Day celebration hosted by the Art League of Lincoln originally scheduled last Saturday, was canceled until next year because of rain, according to Lincoln Art League President Gia McNutt. "We are heartbroken but it seemed like a public-safety issue when the thunderstorm was predicted," McNutt said Saturday afternoon. "When the report showed thunderstorms, we thought it was wise to cancel." The Clay Day celebration was scheduled to be an all-day street festival with more than 50 artists and business vendors, a scavenger hunt, prizes and a kids' zone at the Art League of Lincoln. Thirty artists were also scheduled to carve clay pipes donated by Gladding, McBean. Lincoln High School students and teachers, Rotary Club of Lincoln, Rockstar Music Academy and Parkour Performing Arts Center were going to assist at the celebration. "It's normally a beautiful event. I've lived here for 48 years and it's something people look forward to," said Lincoln Area Archives Museum Treasurer Cherie Weygandt, who said the downtown museum stays open during the celebration. "It's an outdoor activity so it would be hard to have artists sculpting in the rain. We can't predict the weather so we'll see what happens next year."
