Pena ties for first at First Tee David Oxley, other area golfers compete

Six Lincoln area golfers competed, including Myles Pena, at the First Tee – Greater Sacramento's annual David Oxley Memorial Tournament at Diamond Oaks Golf Course in Roseville on Monday. Pena currently attends Twelve Bridges Middle School. Pena tied for first in the boys' 12- to 13-year-old age division with a three-over-par 75, his lowest round of the season. Pena birdied four holes, including back-to-back birdies on holes 14 and 15. Pena won a tournament earlier this season at Morgan Creek Country Club in April. "I feel my approach wedges and irons were giving me a lot of scoring opportunities today," Pena said. "Unfortunately, I had a few missed putts and kept giving birdies back. Over the last few months, I've gained 20 to 30 yards on my drives. My biggest goal for the rest of the summer is to get my handicap below a two." In the same age group was Lane Martin, who placed seventh with an 83, and Ethan Lee, who came in 16th with a 104. In the boys' 16- to 18-year-old age group, Tanner Wade placed ninth out of 17 golfers with an 83. Wade plays golf at Whitney High School. On the girls' side, Twelve Bridges High's Emma Leingang came in 10th out of 17 golfers with a score of 91. This was Leingang's second Top-10 finish of the season as she came in seventh at the Alta Sierra Junior Tournament in March. "I've worked really hard on my short game and it has been paying off," Leingang said. "My coach always tells me ,'Don't worry about the people you're playing with, you're trying to beat the course.' I need to trust the club and not second-guess myself. I feel like I'm right there for a breakthrough. I've been working very hard during this offseason and I feel like I'm ready to take it to the next level." Leingang's Rhinos teammate Charlie Cho also competed in the tournament in the 12- to 14-year-old division and came in ninth with a 95. The next First Tee tournament will take place at Ancil Hoffman Golf Course on Wednesday, after press time.
