Guest editorial: Is WPUSD on same page as Sziraki? Probably not

Western Placer Unified School District claims that they have not found any evidence of wrongdoing on the part of The Landing Spot and Pastor Casey Tinnin, but if that's the case, what disciplinary actions have been taken against Principal Jennifer Hladun, who let this group come on campus without going through proper vetting channels? What made her think it was all right to skip reasonable district protocols that exist to protect students and teachers? What would make any school official presume to think this is all right? Is Hladun truly repentant or is she only sorry that she's been caught? Not only that, but since The Landing Spot has hosted drag shows in the past, what's to say they won't want to host them on school grounds in the future? Drag shows by their very nature are highly sexual even if they're "family friendly," so in what universe is it appropriate to host a drag show at facilities paid for by taxpayers? That's hugely out of line, particularly when the events are spearheaded by an activist group styling itself as a "church." Not only that, but Tinnin is clearly basking in his supposed vindication and flattering himself that Jesus is OK with what he's doing. He might want to tell the rest of us what Project Veritas supposedly edited from that video and how it makes him look any better, because as it is, what he said doesn't reflect well on someone who claims to be a pastor. Where does he get off specifically aiming to anger parents and encouraging kids to not be truthful? Where does he get off acting as if he has the right to facilitate the separation of families if parents don't agree with his ideology? Where does he get off agreeing with statements such as, "You gotta get 'em young"? Jesus would NEVER tell kids to lie to their parents or anyone else, not only because it doesn't honor the parents, but because lying is a sin. In fact, Jesus said in Matthew 18:6-7 that if anyone caused any one of the little ones who believed in Him to sin, it would be better for them if they had never been born. Also, the only kind of sexual relationship Jesus specifically sanctions is one-man, one-woman marriage (Matthew 19:4-6), and He continually told people to "go and sin no more." (John 5:14, 8:11) Not much gray area there. I know not everyone is a Christian or believes the Bible is true, but since Loomis Basin Church of Christ has chosen to play the Jesus card, the words of Jesus are what they're going to get. What's more, anyone who thinks this battle is over is fooling themselves. While LGBTQ kids need care and understanding, the breaking of district protocols and the breach of trust between schools and parents hurt everyone much more. The inkling I get is that WPUSD is either trying to kick the can down the road or hoping everyone forgets by the time school starts. I agree with outgoing Placer Union High School District superintendent Dr. George Sziraki that kids deserve a high-quality education free of partisan politics and distractions. Does WPUSD agree? If they keep enabling groups like The Landing Spot and giving free passes to staff members who willfully break protocols, they probably don't.
