10 years ago Oct. 24, 2013 A Service will be held for Dorothy June Goins-Hodgson, 88, a native of Marin County and a long time resident of Loomis. Many local residents would stop and provide transportation for Dorothy and her three children who suffered from Downs syndrome. Danny Chavez, a former meth cook, was operating a men's drug recovery program in Roseville. He had battled the demons of addiction and crime for years. Sober for 10 years, he kept a small piece of paper in his pocket written by his niece when she was 7 years old stating how "crazy" Uncle Danny was from drug abuse. Anytime Danny felt anxiety he would pull out that crumpled paper and stare at it. Alex Obert, a 2010 Del Oro High School graduate, scored the winning goal for the UOP water polo team in a win over Stanford. Waddie Mitchell will be featured in the Cowpoke Fall Gathering to be held in the Blue Goose Event Center in Loomis. Waddie organized the original cowboy poetry festival in Elko, Nevada, which in turn sprouted hundreds of cowboy poetry events across the country. Bruno and Janice Gallindo of Lincoln Hills were very happy to get their beloved cat, Casper, back after he was missing for over a year. Janice recalled when the Siamese-Tabby mix showed up over 7 years ago, "A feral cat Bruno had been feeding showed up with a newborn kitten in her mouth. She walked right up to him, meowed as if to say 'I can't take care of him, so I'm giving him to you.' The lovable Casper won Bruno's heart in short order." 25 years ago Oct. 22, 1998 One senior couple's dream to preserve their Penryn ranch as a haven for birds and wildlife came to fruition when Art and Helene Traylor donated their 90 acre Traylor Ranch Nature Preserve and Bird Sanctuary to the county. Mark Limbird, a 1996 Del Oro High School graduate, was sworn in as a Sacramento County Deputy Sheriff. The Placer County Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League celebrated its 70th birthday. Mike Masaoka, the first volunteer to enlist in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, authored the JACL creed. Mike's widowed mother was sent off to the Manzanar Internment Campo during WWII as her 5 sons went off to war. One son, Ben, was killed in the rescue of the Lost Texas Battalion. Ike was totally disabled after being wounded and the other 3 brothers, Henry, Tad, and Mike, were also wounded fighting for our country. Bert Braun will offer the 4th Annual Cowpoke Poetry Gathering in Loomis with Sourdough Slim (Rick Crowder) being featured. Lt. David Harris was the new Commander of the South Placer Sheriff's Substation in Loomis. He was the Team Leader on the Special Enforcement Team (SWAT) most recently. Lt. Harris had been the Air support Unit Commander since 1995, a position he would continue to hold. Soccer player Aaron Deen was selected as "Athlete of the Week" for Del Oro High School. Coach John Bowler said, "Aaron is one of the cornerstones of the team. We know we can always count on him to be there." As part of "Make a Difference Day," at least 200 students, parents, and community members were involved in Loomis School's "Bag Buddies," started by teacher Jan Brown. The bags, filled with toys, were distributed to local hospitals. Among those helping with the project were Shelby Haynes along with her mother Karen and grandmother Mildred Dias as they selected bright fabrics donated by Beverly's Fabrics in Rocklin. 50 years ago Oct. 18, 1973 Funeral services were held for Mrs. Hanayo Yego, 59, a native of Atlantic City, New Jersey and a resident of Placer County for the past 40 years. She was a member of the Placer Buddhist Church and the Placer Chapter of the J.A.C.L. Hanayo was survived by her husband Constable Hike Yego. Services were held for Crume Clee Arehart, 86, a native of Rutledge, Missouri and a resident of the Loomis Basin for the past 34 years. He was a retired transportation foreman at McClellan AFB. Chuck Gardner was the newest teacher at Del Oro High School where he will be teaching business classes. He previously taught at Wasco High School. Chuck moved to Loomis and was one of Del Oro's eligible bachelors. In response to the proposed incorporation of Loomis, the question was "where does Rocklin end and Loomis begin?" No one was quite sure. The Loomis 4-H Club accepted donations for the "Toys for Tots" drive behind Frank and Larry's snack bar. At a poultry group meeting the members learned the difference between a cock, hen, pullet, and cockeral. Members of that group were Randy Potter, Meredith Blount, Crystal Barron, and Cheryl Oates under the leadership of Mrs. Sally Barron. President Richard Nixon was about to choose a new Vice President to replace Spiro Agnew. Sandy Rhoads of Loomis was one of the leading entrants for the title of Miss Grand National at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. The 10-day show was considered the West's most prestigious horse show. The Del Oro High School Chapter of AFS International Scholarships elected officers Ed Wright, Jane Eisemann, Rhonda Ding, and Paul Pace. History of Loomis provided by Vivian Rasmussen: James Oscar Loomis, an old pioneer, was the first Pino Postmaster from December,1869 to July of 1886. The community named Pino was later changed to Loomis. The legend goes that the postal inspector objected to the way Loomis kept the U.S. mail in a cigar box, where residents picked out their own mail. So Mr. Loomis threw the cigar box, mail and all, out in the road. 75 years ago April 1948 Funeral Services were held for Christian Rasmussen, 89, who came to the U.S. from Denmark at the age of 20. He worked in Lincoln in the agricultural industry until starting a career with the railroad out of Rocklin. He moved to Loomis in 1907 and became a progressive fruit rancher. In 1884 Christian married Boline Hansen, also a native of Denmark. A Service was held on April 10 in Southern California for W.B. Cline, the father of Vivian Rasmussen of Loomis. Ed Leak, Commander of the local American Legion Post, was pleased with the progress made on a Memorial Hall for Loomis. Playing at the State in Auburn was "Daisy Kenyon" starring Joan Crawford and Henry Fonda. Mrs. Longley of Loomis made Chinese Ming trees for Christmas presents. They were so popular, she began selling them as a business. Derived from the use of drunkometers, it was declared that 6 shots of whiskey or 6 bottles of beer would boost the alcoholic level in a person to 15 percent. At that point a person is considered drunk and should not be driving. The Finnish Temperance Hall in Rocklin was sold to U.F.K.B.&S. of Rocklin. Jesse Gatt, on of the most confirmed local bachelors will wed Bernice Kessler. Frank Nute will act as best man and Mrs. Marge Nute attending the bride. Robert Larsen will escort the bride. The Placer County Historical Society received Articles of Incorporation from Secretary of State Frank Jordan, who personally paid the cost as a donation to Placer County. The Placer County Water Users Association requested 1,375,000 acre feet of water annually from the state department of public works. Two halls offered a night of music and dancing in Rocklin. Uno Hebuck's orchestra will play old time music at Finnish Hall and Bunny Crites will play a medley of music at Pleasure Hall. Penryn's Troop 9 Boy Scout earning an award at the Placer-Foothill Court of Honor was Masamune Kojima. Earning awards from Troop 12 of Looms were Gene Barlow, Gerald Martynse, Guy Hamberg, Gene Hoagland, Elmer Meekins, Taft Nakamoto, Charles Beaver, Jim Court, David Juarros, Robert Rasmussen, Elvin Vance, and Jay Townsend.
