Kathy Miller Scogna 4/22/1949-10/20/2023

Kathy Miller Scogna, writer, historian, sister, mother, and grandmother, was the daughter of Frank L Miller III and Helen Hartnett Miller. She grew up in Darien, Connecticut and graduated from the Thomas School. She attended Colorado Women's School in Denver, Colorado, then lived several years in California before moving to Pennsylvania in the mid-70's. In the late 1970s, Kathy M. Scogna, alongside her late husband, Joseph R. Scogna Jr., established "Life Energy Research." His research and concentration in holistic health, nutrition, homeopathy, and various forms of wellness modalities resulted in numerous volumes of work throughout the 1980s. In 1989, Joseph R. Scogna Jr. passed away, leaving behind a rich legacy of health-related publications, as well as pioneering research in quantum physics. Kathy carried on their mission as "Life Energy Publications" in 1999. Over the years, she diligently republished and expanded their body of work, compiling a total of 14 books for the company. Her enduring dedication to holistic health culminated in her final authored work, SAF Simplified (2nd Edition), in 2019. In 2020, she entrusted the business to her son, Nicholas Scogna, ensuring the continuation of their holistic wellness legacy. Kathy grew up in a home that valued history and she became fascinated by Pennsylvania history after renovating a farmhouse and discovering the oldest section was made out of logs. This led her to the county records department, which then led to further research at various historical institutions. Her children will tell you, however, that her love for history began much earlier, as she frequently stopped at any historical marker she encountered while traveling. In the 1990's, she began writing local history books, which included Lower Heidelberg Township: Now and Then (1992), The History of Marion Township (1994), North Heidelberg Township: History and Lore (1996), The Ford at the Schuylkill: A Glimpse of Early Reading, Pennsylvania from Lenapehoking to Frontier Outpost: An Illustrated History (1998), and A House of Bread: The Jesuits Celebrate 70 Years in Wernersville, Pennsylvania (2000). She was a frequent contributor to the West Berks Crier newspaper, as well as the Historical Review of Berks County. She served on the Board of Directors of the Heidelberg Heritage Society, the Berks County Association for Graveyard Preservation, and the Friends of the Conrad Weiser Homestead. In 2007, she moved back to California in order to be closer to her children, as well as her beloved California Redwoods. She republished several more of her late husband's works, as well as curriculum to train Symptoms Awareness Formula (SAF) practitioners, a unique approach to holistic diagnosis and healing developed by her late husband. Kathy was a member of Incarnation Anglican Church in Roseville, where her son, Father Joshua Lickter, serves as founding priest. She loved to help serve the homeless at The Gathering Inn, and was a member of both the Red Hat Society, and the Daughters of the King. She enjoyed walking in the foothills and foraging for edible plants. If it grew in the wild in Northern California, and you could eat it, she could identify it and come up with a recipe for it. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph R. Scogna, Jr., as well as her sister, the Rev. Helen (Heili) Moore. She is survived by her five children, Father Joshua Lickter (and wife Rachel), Jezra Johnson Lickter, Nicholas Scogna (and partner Britta Vance), Kalli Scogna, and Jason Scogna (and partner Stella Robertson), her two grandchildren, Elliott Lickter, and Keanu Scogna, and sisters Barrie (Bibi) Gollinger and Nicola (Niki) Miller, and brother Char Miller. A celebration of life service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, November 4th, at Bethel Lutheran Church, 1050 Douglas Blvd., Roseville, CA.
