Looking Back, Loomis: 1974 - Discussion of recess noise gets loud

50 years ago May 23, 1974 A Rosary was recited in memory of Eugene Costa, 65, a resident of Loomis for 22 years. A veteran of WWII, he was a retired instrument mechanic for McClellan AFB. On the first day of June, it would be 50 years since Otto J. Helms said "I do" to his bride, Jessie, in Booneville, Indiana. To celebrate their Golden Anniversary, the couple will be honored at a reception at the Grant Park Missionary Baptist Church in Roseville. The couple lived on Cavitt-Stallman Road in Loomis. The Del Oro High School Band will perform during opening night of the Cal-Cop Trotting Season at Cal Expo. The school board rejected Placer County's offer of $80,000 for the old Loomis Grammar School building and site. The vote was 4-1, with Jim Makimoto dissenting. It was a night of hot tempers. At one point, Loomis School Principal Clarke Powers slammed his fist on the table exclaiming, "I'll be damned if I'll keep those kids quiet at recess," in reference to a discussion of outside noise. Linda Newman was crowned Queen of the Rocklin Jubilee 75-6 Celebration. Runners-up were Wendy Wight and Katrina Badenhoop. Placer Elementary School would be the location of the annual picnic and reunion of students who attended Rockspring, Loomis, Franklin or Citrus Colony Schools between 1894 an 1924. The annual Rocklin "Old Timers" Reunion was the setting for those attending to reminisce about the "old days." Mame Willard helped to organize the event. The fifth in a series of "Pen Sketches of Loomis and Vicinity" highlighted the Strong Home, located on Suzuki Lane off Val Verde Road. Mr. Strong built the house around 1990 and put in 80 acres of peach, plum and pear trees. Mrs. Strong of Michigan sailed around Cape Horn and married Mr. Strong. Fern Martin, Mrs. Strong's niece, was 9 years old when her family moved onto the Strong property. In 1910, Fern's father cared for the fruit trees since Mr. Strong had died by that time. (to be continued) 25 years ago June 3, 1999 The Loomis Fire Protection District dedicated its Firm Muster to Jeff Altrock. He died March 31, 1997, while serving with the fire department. "No one would have enjoyed participating the Fire Muster more than Jeff," said Russ Kelley. The final performance at the Red Brick Art Center in Loomis was Mick Berry starring in "The Full Mickey." The Motherlode Stage Company, a nonprofit theatre company, was created by Stuart Smith in 1994 to tell the California Story. The Del Oro High School softball team was down 6-0 to Oakmont in the first inning of the Sac-Joaquin Section championship. However, the Lady Eagles fought back to win 7-6 with LeAnn Hoglen, Sarah Boswell, Robin Boliere, Kari Koller and Christen Boswell getting key hits. Niki Anderson scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Del Oro graduate Shineah Pitcher enlisted in the Air Force and would be training as a security policeman. Marine Pfc. Ryan Oliver served at Fort McClellan, Alabama. His wife, Tracy, is the daughter of Pete and Debra Seadorf of Loomis. Army Pvt. Therese Whitten, a 1997 Del Oro graduate, completed the Petroleum Supply Specialist course at Fort Lee, Petersburg, Virginia. Marine Pfc. Garrick Galvez of Rocklin graduated from basic training at MCRD, San Diego. Airman Danielle Dean completed basic training at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Texas. Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Anthony Reeves served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson in the Arabian Gulf. Two bombers, a B-17 and B-24 on display at the Lincoln Airport, were flying overhead as they headed to a new location. The B-17 and B-24 bombers made up the brunt of the American Strategic Bombing Force during World War II, in the Pacific and European Theatres. 75 years ago November 1948 Funeral services were held for Carrie May Warren, 74, a native of Smithville, New York. She came to Loomis in 1910 and lived here until the 1930s, when she moved to Sacramento. Her husband, John Thomas Warren, passed away in 1934. Left to mourn Carrie's passing was her son, Ernest C. Warren, of Loomis. Supervisors of Placer County opened bids for the construction of a Veteran's Memorial Hall in Loomis. It would be the second to be built in the county, the other being Forest Hill Hall, which is now in use. Charles H. Moore of Roseville was killed when his auto was hit by a truck after passing through the subway. Charles was associated with Purdy's Creamery. Jack Wilson moved his hot dog stand from Loomis to the former El Palomar Cafe near the Penryn Hill. His famous hot dogs were noted for their extreme length and flavor. His employees were "Red" Woodbury and "Tiny" Myers. Mildred Lane, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Lane of Rocklin, became the bride of Walter Taylor of Loomis, the son of Mr. and Mrs. P.L. Taylor. Ellsworth Martinelli, chairman of the Placer Citizens Committee, opposed the unification of elementary and secondary schools in the county. Miss Melba Kokila, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. V.G. Kokila of Rocklin, completed five years of college and nursing training. She was employed as a nurse in the Sutter Maternity Hospital in Sacramento. Among the local businesses offering S&H Green Stamps were Loomis Variety & Clothing, Rocklin Market and Nelthorpe & Son. An oil well at Loomis School? Custodian Mr. Walt Mariante had been having trouble keeping enough oil in the stoves in the "bungalows." He located oil oozing along the oil line and began digging some 12 inches into the ground. Then the "gusher" came in. Too bad it wasn't the real McCoy.
