Soccer club raises money for Rocklin parks

At a time when the city of Rocklin is facing layoffs and a challenges with park improvements, a local soccer club has stepped up to help. The Rocklin Youth Soccer Club presented a $26,705 check to the city of Rocklin Recreation Commission for park improvements at their May 12 commission meeting.Chairwoman Christine Anderson accepted the check on the city's behalf. President Dina Lombardo and Past-president Angie Langstrom said they were pleased to present the check to the city. "The donations made by the Rocklin Soccer Club and other community organizations provide the opportunity to continue to improve Rocklin parks during times when park development revenues are limited," Assistant City Manager Mark Reimer said. Rocklin's Park Repair and Development Fund was largely funded by grants that are not available for fiscal year 2010-11, according to Reimer."Donations such as the one from the Rocklin Soccer Club also reaffirms that parks and recreation are an important part of our well-rounded city," Reimer said.Representatives of the Rocklin Youth Soccer Club have worked with city staff to develop a set of projects that will be funded with the donation. The Recreation Commission approved projects including the replacement of shade trees at Twin Oaks Park blown down last winter during a bad storm, the planting of new shade trees at Azevedo Park to provide shade for spectators viewing soccer games, installation of a children's swing set at Lone Tree Park, and the expansion of the drainage system at the Azevedo Park soccer fields.The Rocklin Soccer Club provides recreational and select level soccer play for more than 2,800 Rocklin youth.
