Placer County Library kicks off summer reading program with 'Choose Your Own Adventure' theme

Placer County Libraries kicked off their summer reading program with a "Choose Your Own Adventure" theme. The event runs through July 27. Participants can sign up through the library's beanstalk page and track their reading, share reviews, earn points and participate in challenges. On the application, they will be asked to choose a path of Knight, Wizard, Faerie, Pirate or Mermaid. All paths are available to all age groups. When participants log their reading, they can earn themed badges for their paths, which can turn into physical prizes they can pick up at the library. Prizes include slap bracelets, lego sets, d&d dice, water bottles and more. They are invited to come to the library once a week to participate in "Side Quests" activities. This week's side quest is a scavenger hunt within the library. The library also hosts events for its summer program like puppet shows, musical performances, magicians, science activities, animal shows and more. Last week, the Rocklin Library hosted a Wizard Workshoppe where participants got to make artful sand potion and wizard-style wands to take home. Programming Librarian Felicia Black feels it's a good opportunity to get community kids to engage with learning when they are out of school. She says the point of the summer reading program is "to help encourage kids to keep reading, keep learning during the summer, help prevent the summer slide of learning loss." She tries to style the program to be an engaging and entertaining way to encourage the community to visit the libraries and read. The summer program takes place at the Auburn, Colfax, Foresthill, Granite Bay, Kings Beach, Rocklin and Tahoe City Library. For more information, visit https://www.placer.ca.gov/8986/Library.
