Valley Christian shut out by Cordova

Valley Christian's varsity football team fell to 1-1 following Friday night's 33-0 loss to Cordova. Valley Christian head coach Doug Williams sort of expected it might be a long night playing against a bigger, faster, more physical Division III team, and he was correct. "It was a tough go for us and a long night," Williams said. "We had one drive that we got close to scoring, but then we turned it over on downs. They're a Division III school with 2,000 kids and we've got 150. They're bigger and super athletic." Williams doesn't believe the loss was in vain. He said there were a lot of things the team could learn from the loss. "Oh, I think absolutely, we can watch film and learn from this game," Williams said. "They had success because we didn't do our job. They exploited that and scored touchdowns. We missed some tackles here, or we weren't aware of where the ball was there or we just didn't do our assignment on this play. We're capable of following the game plan in more detail." With a running clock in the second half, the Lions kept Cordova off the scoreboard. Next up for the Lions is a game on the road at Highlands, which is also where they play their home games. "Highlands is a Division V school, we're Division VII and their line is bigger than ours," Williams said. "I would say they're probably similar to Cordova. I think if we're well-versed on what we need to improve on, that would translate well in our game against Highlands."
