Pirates of Pesaro: Arrr ... beware ye ghouls and goblins on this Lincoln street

Rex and Darla Cowart inspire their neighbors to join in on family friendly pirate-themed street Pirates of Pesaro for Halloween decorations in Lincoln. The Cowarts have always loved Halloween. Their obsession with decorations started 20 years ago in Rocklin. They began with a tombstone-themed yard, then they added skeletons. When they moved to Lincoln eight years ago, they decided to do a pirate-themed yard. "It was just a little little small vignette and it just got real popular," Rex explained. "So then, it just grew. And then I built props for it. Each year, I build more and more props. Eventually, I ran out of space and so my neighbors let me scooch into their yard." It started with one lawn and has grown to 15 lawns around the court. The couple says each lawn is tailored to the neighbors' interests. One neighbor loves witches. They have witches surrounding a pirate in their lawn with a sign that states: "BEWARE PIRATES THE WITCHES LIVE HERE." Multiple neighbors with kids have pirate-themed tombstones with their children's names on it. The couple says there are hidden messages all over. The attention to detail does not go unnoticed. The pirate-themed street has become a year-round gig for these two. The couple said last year, 600 children came by on Halloween to see their pirates. This year, they expect more than 800 children to come by. They plan to hand out pirate booty popcorn to match theme of their street.
