Turkeys fly into firehouse during 11th annual drive

The 1,112 turkeys that arrived at the Joiner Street firehouse on Thursday, Nov. 21, didn't exactly fly in but were delivered by hundreds of Lincoln residents donating turkeys for those who need a little extra help this holiday season. This year's Turkey Drive, the 11th annual event, was again orchestrated by the Lincoln Salt Mine and supported by the Lincoln Fire Department and community service organizations such as the Lincoln Rotary and Lincoln High School football and baseball teams. Thanksgiving is a national day of reflection when we gather with family and friends, whether old or new. The Salt Mine's executive, Eric Long, said the community's outpouring "will again provide Thanksgiving and Christmas meals for hundreds of families this year. Thank you to all who donated and volunteered." The nearly constant rain didn't stop the continuing incoming line of vehicles for the Gobbler Drop-Off at the firehouse. Intech Mechanical took the top donation honor with 120 turkeys, with historical top-giver Lincoln Christian Life Center a close second with 106 turkeys. The Lincoln Sprouts grocery store not only delivered frozen turkeys but also custom turkey dinners for the Lincoln fire station crews. Lincoln firefighter Ron Olson was again the boots-on-the-ground coordinator, saying, "We feel grateful to be involved in an event where the community comes together to help those in need this Thanksgiving."
