Looking Back Loomis: 1949 - Bakery owner stops chimney fire

75 years ago March 1949 Excess soot in the chimney caused a fire on opening day at the new bakery in Loomis owned by Mr. and Mrs. Slocum. Fred extinguished the fire before any extensive damage was done. Mrs. Rosella Winter, Christmas Seal sale chairman, announced the 42nd annual Seal Sale topped the quota of $5,000 with sales of $7,676. Dorothy Oakes, President of the Placer County Tuberculosis and Health Association, said the annual dinner would be held at the Valencia Club on Hwy. 40 in Penryn. The orchestra, chorus, and glee clubs of Loomis School will present music for the local residents. The Gold Unit of the California Newspaper Publishers Association met at the Ships Bell Restaurant in Loomis. Among the publishers on hand were Bert Cassidy, Vernon McCann, Bill Cassidy and Lloyd Biggs, Auburn Journal; Harry Callender and I.H. Sifton, Placer Auburn Herald; Milton Kjor and Dick Blankenburg, Roseville Press Tribune; and T.P. Sagaser, Loomis News. Robert Mitchum and Myrna Loy starred in "The Red Pony" in the theaters. There will be six courses during a progressive dinner sponsored by the Ladies Aid of Loomis. The menu and homes were 1. Appetizers, Bess Logerwell's home. 2. Tomato soup, Ola Beckett. 3. Molded salad, Bertha Fisher. 4. Baked ham and scalloped potatoes, Ethel Law. 5. Apple pie and coffee, Lucille Townsend. 6. Punch and floor show, Dorothy Oakes. (Standing Guard-oral histories) Among the young men serving with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, while family members were forced to live in internment camps, was Homer Takahashi. The Loomis resident left with the RCT in 1943 recalling, "We started to fight over in Italy, and from Italy we went to France ... we didn't know when to quit." 50 years ago Feb. 13, 1975 Funeral services were held for Joseph S. Bachman, 89, a resident of the Loomis area for 33 years. Services will be conducted for Allie Flesher Norman, 87, a resident of Loomis for the past 85 years. She was a Past Matron of Penrhyn OES Chapter 159. Del Oro High School band members earning their place in the 1975 Northern California Honor Band were Laura DuPriest, Antoinette Gaubert, Kathy Freeland, Lance Erickson, Brian Howard, Myra Yamashiro, Denise Matsuda, Dawn Gade, Chris Nielson, Barbara Lewis and Mel Makita. With close to 3,000 graduates, Del Oro High School considered forming an Alumni Club. Teacher Robert Lasley said, "I don't want this to be a faculty or school thing. It has to belong to the alumni." Mr. Terry Clouson, a popular teacher at Penryn School and a member of the Country Cossacks western group, was a victim of burglary. Items stolen included an electric guitar and historical firearms. Del Oro seniors earning "grand slam" (all A's) report cards were Lana Anderson, Patty Betts, Bill Imamoto, Richard Matsuoka, Jeff Robertson, Lynelle Weiss and Laurie Zech. With teacher Miss Goldie Palmer were students Lindsley Nelthorpe, Fred Wales, Fern Stone, Gwendolyn McGovern, Lester Day, Nell Wales, Charley Shepard, Ida Lucas, Jimmie Lucas, Kirk Williamson, Arthur Lucas, Takio Takahashi, Albert Shepard, Idel Keely, Carmen McGovern, Margaret Fassett and Mary Nelthorpe. A regular at the school was "Bruno," a red bloodhound. The names were supplied by Kate Fieser Leak and Fern Stone Martin. 25 years ago Feb. 17, 2000 A community effort made it possible to construct a new multi-level play structure at Franklin School in Loomis. Cutting the ribbon during ceremonies were Principal Peter Towne, parent Alice Grassia, along with students Jake Lenard and Preston Countrymen. Among the many parents helping with the construction were Mike Roth and Don Miller. Students were involved in the selection of the play pieces. "That's the slide I picked," said kindergarten student Caroline Parmley. Tom Landry, former coach of the Dallas Cowboys, passed away. He led the cowboys to five Super Bowls and won 270 games in the NFL. Thanks to him, Dallas earned the title of "American Team." Alyssa Marie Pollack of Loomis earned a spot on the Dean's List at Seattle Pacific, a Christian university. Franklin School first- and second-graders celebrated the Chinese New Year with a parade; enjoying eating fried rice, pork won tons, tea; playing Chinese checkers and using the ancient Chinese Tangram puzzle. Among the students were Kassy Cargill, Tanner Quinn, Katie Sinnot-Neal, Seth Ahlquist, Kenny Andri, Taylor Parker, Forrest Waymire, Cris Swain, Allison Bates, Brody Lord, Hunter Chandler and Alexa Laws. Native American artifacts and a variety of birds will be on view during a 2-mile walk at the new Taylor Ranch Preserve in Penryn. The graduation of D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) was held at Penryn and Newcastle Schools. Top essayists at Penryn were Terra Dawson, Sam Uptain, Julianne Reid, Jake Arent, Jamie Billings and Michell Lloyd. For Newcastle were Lauren Jabusch, Daniel Loveland, Jillian Witzke, John Hancock, Jill Tokutomi and Brandon Bews.
